none of my bill payments are on auto, even HOA payments which is fixed every month. i just schedule it early on and let it release on a particular date if im going to be out of town that week. 
and as ms.bc said, i too hate banks pulling money automatically from my bank accounts, so i dont sign up for that either. i trigger it, not them. 
i think online bills are fine just as long as one keeps a bill folder individually in gmail or outlook or waterver, as if filing docs into a folder in a physical filing cabinet.
