It's a fantastic gun. I've only taken it duck hunting once so far, but it did great. Got nice and dirty and still shot like a dream. I like my 20 gauge BPS a little better for skeet/trap shooting, but the SX3 is a ton of fun to shoot for those too. It is definitely going to be my "beater" gun in the future, its just built so well so I'm not afraid to let it take some abuse. I'm considering getting a Benelli SuperSport right now, so if I get that the SX3 will probably go to my dad except when I'm hunting in the water.

Awesome. It's such an undersold gun. Such a shame. I LOVE mine. I have a Benelli Super Black Eagle 2... Never again. Such crap. If you don't use high power loads sometimes it doesn't cycle. And it likes to be kept clean and oiled. My SX3 goes through more abuse now, 5000 rounds and no issues, no cleaning, maybe oiled it once?
I used my trusty 11-87 instead of my Benelli 99% of the time, it just weighed a lot more than the 11-87.
Oh, and the 11-87 I'd shoot 250 rounds non stop for 2000 rounds. Gone through 20-30k of ammo without anything, never had one hiccup.

Anyone recommend a shotgun that I can have fun with and modify?

The go to is a Remington 870 if you want a variety of available parts.

870P, or one built by AIP. Remington's Express line is junk now days, I feel. If you want to avoid that, a Mossberg 590a1. I recommend the 18.5" version. The 20" is rather unwieldy at times. The Magpul furniture is amazing. I bought a set for my former roommate for the 590a1 I bought him 2 years ago, and it changed the whole shotgun's personality. HUGE! improvement!

Yeah, you are actually the first person I've interacted with that actually owns an SX3. When I bought mine the guy at Cabelas said it was the first one he had sold personally, and he wasn't sure if other guys had sold many either. It was surprising to hear that because all the reviewers rave about it, so I thought it would be pretty popular. My dad has a similar problem with his A5. It won't cycle about 50% of the time unless it is shooting #4 shot or heavier. Kind of a problem here since ranges won't let you shoot anything more powerful than 7 1/2.

I'd take a look at the SX3. The 870 is fantastic, but the SX3 is great too and it's a semi-auto. I love my pump, and you can't go wrong with either, but I've began to prefer the semi-auto since I got it.

Totally agree, first person I've talked to that has an SX3, and you're probably the only one, lol. No idea why they don't fly off the shelves... And they're fairly priced.

The SX3 is sooooooooooo fun to shoot. I can unload 5 rounds quicker than... Well... REALLY quickly, lol
But the 870 is easier to modify, a TON of different parts, and the gun is tried and true. I'd NEVER go with any shotgun lower than an 870.
That being said, I really wanted an 870 pump shotgun (always had semi autos, 11-87 and such,) but mainly for the awesome sound (reverse door knock)... Walked out with my SX3. It's lighter, it wasn't too much more, it has less kick, it's been just as reliable so far, the hardware and outer barrel coating doesnt rust ever, and good god almighty can that thing cycle rounds. As fast as I can pull the trigger it will shoot. And i shot a deer with it too, so no complaints all around.
