I might have to get a shirt.

That was hard to watch. Looking at the muzzle flash between the first & second SLAP round and the APT round, I'd have been real leery of another SLAP round. That second SLAP round was pretty hot...

I wonder where the SLAP rounds were from? If from an old Eastern block country. Think I know what happened.

Painful lesson on why it is important to pay attention to what your gun/ammo is doing.

Thank God he survived. His recovery has been remarkable too.

TBH, I'm not familiar with SLAP rounds so I more than likely would have made the same mistake. Honestly, most of us would have made that mistake so I can't blame him at all. There was subtle red flags that most of us would have missed. Hindsight is 20/20. Makes me wonder it there might have been a noticeable weight difference in the rounds. A round that hot makes me think double load or way hotter powder was used in that round. I wonder if he has any more that round can be taken apart to see if there is an explanation of why that one round was so hot.

Not sure where they're from but he claimed it was unmolested military surplus. What do you think happened?

I'm going to guess that the sabot got stuck in the barrel. With that type of breech, he should have inspected the bore prior to loading another round.

I would have the same opinion as you, but he shot a non-SLAP round before the one that exploded and the previous round was logged in the back of the fire hydrant. Anybody would reasonable assume that the bore was clear of obstructions.

I'll say this, him shooting a pistol at the end of the vid was nice. To me it seamed like he was a little hesitant pulling that trigger on that first shot. Don't know why... The smile he gave after that first shot made me happy. No body would blame him if he took a break from shooting.

That would be a reasonable presumption. The previous round being stuck in the fire hydrant and not exiting completely, when others had penetrated through, might have been a good excuse to take a look. We don't know if he pulled the bullet out of they hydrant to take a look at it or not. It's possible that part of the bullet remained behind in the barrel. What happened to that rifle has the earmarks of a obstructed barrel. Then again, I had a semi-auto Thompson copy come back to the gun shop I worked at with 6 230 grain 45 ACP bullets stuck in the bore and it didn't come apart...

If this was the late '70's, during the Cold War.
And the ammo was from an eastern bloc commie country. I know exactly what happened. The ammo was stolen. Messed with, and put back where it was stolen from. And I may or may not had my fingers in it.

Ah yes, the outgrowth of a CIA/Green Beret project that put the oddball sabotaged round into selected ammo caches.... I've heard of that project.

I just wasn't aware it continued into the late 70s....

We were still doing it up to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Did it in Vietnam too.

Steal a case of ammo. CAREFULLY open up the case. Pull a couple rounds apart. Under charge a few rounds. Over charge a few rounds. We would also test the ballistics of a few rounds. We KNEW exactly what they was using. CAREFULLY put everything back in the case. Making it look like it was never opened. And then put the case of ammo back where we got it from. We used to pay the locals to steal it, and then put it back. We did small arms, all the way up to mortar's.

The under charged rounds would stick a bullet in the barrel. The over charged rounds would blow the action apart. The mortar's. The under charged rounds would go a few yards. The over charged rounds would kill everyone around it. The reason for all of this. Is each case of ammo is just part of a larger lot of ammo. When an "accident" happened. They would have to pull the whole lot of ammo out of service. You maybe talking about 1000's of cases out of service until they finished their investigation. This really played hell with their supply chain. Do a couple of different lots of ammo at the same time. You could shut down a whole division. What soldier wants to shoot bad ammo. The moral would also sink.

In Vietnam. We would do our own ammo and AK rounds, and place the cases along trails the VC used. They would find the cases of ammo and try to use it. It didn't end well for some of them.

You didn't read this from me.

Did you guys see this update?

Supposedly the threads of the cap could hold up to 161K PSI!

Either way that was one hooooooooot round.

Also the possibility of those SLAP rounds bing fraudulent is looking more likely.

Yeah.....

And if it came from Eastern Europe, it could have been 'modified'...
