I've seen the drum mag, but never shot it.

That pic was taken at Camp Ripley Minnesota. I am medical director of the Bomb Squad here. Twice a year we go there to destroy returned surplus ammo. Two years ago we had an absolute boat-load of POF (Pakistani) 9mm sub-gun ammo to get rid of. Although we blew a lot of it up, we fortunately had a number of 9mm sub-guns to get rid of some of it through. Most 9mm pistols won't handle that +P+ load, but Glocks do just fine with it.

We also had a lot of 7.62mm to get rid of ;)

Coincidentally, we're headed there tomorrow for more of the same.

So I definitely want to pick up a pocket gun. My G26 in an IWB holster is kind of annoying with shorts and a t-shirt.

Walther PPS IMHO. It's a very nice pistol. My wife has one, as do I. Your other options are the KelTec, which is IMHO a bad pistol, or the Kahr PM9, which IMHO has rather finicky feeding issues. There's also the Ruger LCP...I've never owned one, I've heard good things and bad things about it...more bad than good.

PPS video from NutNFancy (it's a reasonable overview, but the guy's kind of a **** and he's never actually shot the thing)

Really? I carry my G23 IWB every day. when I bought it I was afraid it would be a PITA but once I got used to it I hardly even know its there.

I've done a good bit of research on the Kahr PM9 and CM9. It seems like they all require 200+ rounds of break in to feed 100% reliably... after that I haven't heard of any issues. I really like those guns, though they are still a little on the large side for a pocket pistol.

Lately I have been leaning toward the LCP but want to see if I can rent one first.

Yeah, I mean maybe with a looser fitting T-shirt it would have been a little better, but today I couldn't help but feel like I was printing a little too much. GF said I was just being paranoid but at the very least I want to have a pocketable pistol.

gotcha, I dont really worry about printing or it becoming visible so I guess that makes it easier

Considering open carry is 100% legal in VA, without a permit, I shouldn't either. But still I do... probably because I don't want to deal with the hassle of some NOVA liberal making a big deal out of it... but then again they are too enamored with themselves to even pay attention. :icon17:

In that case I should just OC my 1911. :rofl2:

Yeah, that's why I CC 99% of the time. I don't want to deal with it.

Though sometimes I OC when I go to the ATM since it's not in the best of locations. I do the good old "Virginia tuck."

In VA, CC in restaurants used to be illegal, so you had to transition to open carry. You basically tuck your shirt in between your holster and your gun, or between the holster and your skin, leaving the handle and back part of the slide open.

AFAIK, The Virginia Tuck is using an IWB holster (typical for concealed), but tucking your shirt inside of the holster so that the grip is displayed. It got named that because they allow Concealed carry in general, but only Open carry is allowed in bars (well, places that sell liquor for on-premises consumption, so probably restaurants too? I'm not all that up on their laws). So you CC w/ your IWB most places and then do the VA Tuck to switch to OC to enter places where CC isn't allowed.

m4a1mustang 05-17-2011 08:34 AM

Up until the summer of last year CC was illegal in places that serve alcohol, but now it's legal as long as you don't consume any alcohol. But you can Open Carry and consume... but you can't be intoxicated. :icon14:

VA passed a law a number of years ago that said localities cannot supersede state law. If it wasn't for this law most of the counties and cities in Northern VA would outlaw guns all together. Very anti-gun up here.

they can't directly outlaw guns, as it would violate the constitution.. but I know what you mean... kinda like Chicago :ugh2:

I think a lot of southern virginia would have laws too. It is surprising how anti-gun most of the state is with how liberal the laws are. I think we have the most liberal gun laws of any southern state.

Need some suggestions here... I am looking for something smaller than my Glock 26 for summer carry. I'd like something pocketable in 9mm flavor but am willing to step down to .380 if need be.

So far I have been thinking:

Kahr CM9
Walther PPS

Bersa Thunder 380CC
Ruger LCP

Thoughts?

c41006 05-30-2011 07:51 PM

The ruger and the kahr are both very good options. What about the LC9

m4a1mustang 05-30-2011 07:55 PM

Didn't think about the LC9. I will have to give that one a look as well.

c41006 05-30-2011 07:59 PM

It is .84" longer and .90" taller so it might be a bit too big but certainly worth a look

The Kahr has well-known feeding problems and tends to be quite finicky about ammo. My buddy is a police firearms trainer and got the Kahr PM9 to carry as a a BUG. So far, it's been back to Kahr twice and he still hasn't been able to get it to run reliably enough to carry on duty. Get the Walther. I have two of them (one is wife's) and they're excellent.

I do like the Walther but I'm not quite sure if it'd fit in a front pocket?

I know the Kahr CM/PM series will fit right in your pocket, and yes, I've heard of the feeding issues but in my research it seems like they all get resolved with a 200+ round break-in or being returned to Kahr for service. I did a lot of research with these because I was going to buy a CW9 before I ultimately chose the G26.

Of course the LCP would fit no problem. Or even a Sig P238 if I wanted to get all fancy.

NismoZ370 05-31-2011 07:26 AM

Nah, I wouldn't call the PPS a pocket gun, but the LC9 and PM9 are only a little better in that regard. If I wanted a pocket gun, pretty much stuck with a .380. I have a couple that work well in that regard but I've gone pretty much 9mm only.

http://SSEquine.net/pps5.jpg

In the 9mm category, I ruled out the PM9 and the LC9 for reliability reasons. I gave a little bit up in size for the PPS, but no regrets.

Very cool. Thanks for the info. My boss is actually looking for a carry gun right now and I told him to look at the PPS in addition to the standard Glock, XD, and M&Ps. It looks like a nice gun.

In other news, I've found that I am indeed allowed to keep a weapon in my car in the parking lot at work, so I need to work a bit on keeping it as secure as possible. I'll keep it easily accessable while driving and stowe it away securely when I make it to the office.

I had a Glock 26, and looked hard at the M&P9c (I have an M&P9L already). The attractive thing to me about the PPS is the single-stack magazine. That nice slim grip makes a HUGE difference in providing a low-profile carry compared to the double-stack G26 and M&P9 compact.

:iagree:

The Glock is very compact length and height wise but it's double-stack design still makes it pretty bulky, which can be annoying in the summer.

Right now I am looking for something that I can keep in a pocket holster for summer, and use the Glock mostly in the spring/fall/winter. I'm looking hard at the Kahr CM9 because I really would like to stay with the 9mm round and that one seems like it would fit the bill -- but I know it'd require at least 200 flawless rounds to ensure it's reliability.

What about a Smith & Wesson J frame? Very light weight and knockdown power of a 357 magnum. Sometimes I forget I have it in my pocket.
