My bro-in-law copped and XD.40 subcompact. Got 5 mags of rangetime out of it and I was extremely impressed. I know there are a lot of Glock worshippers out there that wont swear by anything less. But the springfield pistol seemed to be a little more thought out.
First thing that struck me. The grip. There are two grips in this world to me that set the standard for extreme ergonomics and ultra-fast target acquisition. IMHO opinion, these guns are the CZ-75 and the 1911. The springfield contour reminds me strongly of the 1911. It fits in the hand like a glove, I have large hands and found the XD to be perfectly thick. The short mag didn't appeal to my hand for optimum grip but grip still felt sure. the extended 10 shot mag was optimum. In my hands, with the extender, the grip fit in my hand like a glove. It was pure perfection. The 1911 style backstrap safety in addition to the glock style trigger safety was an excellent touch. Plus one for Springfield. I prefer steel guns over polymer because striker fired triggers basically suck. My fingers are long and the length of pull is not only too short and strange feeling for my long fingers, but often cumbersome for rapid fire. Most strikers need good range time to get comfortable with. For me, the sloppy break of the trigger is another minus... For a short time i owned a taurus 24/7 SA/DA pistol hoping that the trigger would break better than glock... It was 10x worse. ![]() Letting off downrange. Surprised the short barrel didn't kick hard and the 40 was very managable. I would guess it's springfields beautifully sculpted heavy slide and polymers natural ability to absorb and disperse shock probably contributed to the managability. I wasn't expecting too much out of a 3" barrel from 165gr 40 cal from 25 yards. but all 10 rounds made in a steel plate, the average size of the broad side of a playstation 3. Those were one shot per second shots. Mag 2. Let off in two shot bursts, half second apart. same distance. Still hit them all in. Mag 3 10 round rapid fire mag dump. 8 in the plate missed the last two rounds. The last two mags i shot off doing draw and shoots firing from cover. The springfield proved accurate no matter the angle. The glock has some advantages. It can be anywhere from 3 to 9 oz lighter. Depending on gun and cal. It has a larger capacity mag. Parts are everywhere. And the biggie is that it's a proven reliable design for nearly 30 years now. In spite of this, it seems the springfield XD series addresses, everything that was or is wrong with the glock. If the XD can shed more weight while retaining the current high quality and increase the amount of quality accessories and higher capacity mags? I think this would be a better alternative to glock under those circumstances. It's the better gun to shoot right from the start. The flipside to that is, with some effort in getting rangetime with a glock and becoming proficient with one. You have more tactical advantages with Glock. so Glock isn't going anywhere just yet. But for a guy that hates striker fire polymers in general. The Springfield XD40, changed my opinion. I'm a fan of this gun. My dream springfield is the EMP. Hopefully, one day, i will get some range time behind it. ![]()

I used to own a Wilson Sentinel. I really like Wilson pistols, but for my money I'd rather buy a Nighthawk. I had a T3 as well as a GRP and loved them. But that Tactical Supergrade is pretty darn nice.

Really? I keep hearing that Wilson trumps nighthawk. I was originally looking at the T3 but was persuaded to look twords Wilson instead.
Also G21sf is now at the GunSmith. Hopefully the new springs and trigger will make the feel of the glock better.

About Wilsons... Awesome stuff. Nighthawk is up there but I think Wilson has better customer service and their designs are just tip-top in fit and finish. Show me a 1911 that sells for the same money that looks better. Christensen Arms 1911s are right up there with the likes of Wilson. I could probably say both are equally on par with each other. In the end, what do you want to pay for 1911 and what is the goal? Looks? Reliability? Customer Service? A $4k 1911 better have some good support behind it. |

Thanks for the tip on Christensen Arms, I'll look into them. Reliability is my number 1 goal, looks come second. I'm getting back into private protection so its gonna be under my coat but I still want it to look pretty lol.

I have been thinking about making a gun purchase recently, talking to friends who are into guns and doing research online about which model is best for me. Years ago, the XD .40 was one of the first pistols I ever shot. Last week a friend suggested I look at the newer XDm .40 variants. I ended up deciding to purchase one today from Palmetto Upstate Armory. I also pre-paid for a CWP class that they will start holding early next month. I'm going to make this thread a journal of sorts to record my thoughts and experiences as a first time gun owner.
Here's a few pics I took of it... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thoughts? Suggestions for mods? Tips for good places to buy mags and ammo? Post below!

First things first, congrats. I believe that, even though that is the "compact", its not double-stack, right?
I have the 4.5" XDm .45, and I'm very pleased with it. That said, in the MAZOC firearms thread, some have been complaining about their SA pistols as of late (they just did a big recall on the XDs .45/9mm line). IMHO, they are an incredible bang for the buck (no pun intended), and generally get very favorable reviews. I know Jon pushes ammoseek.com for ammo, and you can also use slickguns.com for good deals on ammo/mags.

![]() Edit: A quick look at both websites shows ammo about the same price for the smaller quantities ($16ish for 50 rounds of .40).

Congrats on the new gun, Pat.
I've been lurking and looking for something, anything that catches my eye. So far, I'm more concerned about paying for Z mods and athletic fees for my boys than getting another gun.

I'm thinking about adding another AR to the collection. Thinking about doing a BCM or DD build with a RISII. Then a magnified optic, maybe an ACOG.
I'm still loving the current DD: ![]() I'm also Glock shopping to have something while my XD and XDs are out of commission. It's a pain in the butt following the stupid 15 rd magazines round limits and trying to find something decent. Wish I had realized the XD/XDm striker issues before this ban went in place... |

A buddy of mine liked my photos of my XDm a lot and asked me to take pics of a couple of his guns. Here's what I got...
