I have a S&W Mod 29 with the 6 1/2" barrel. When I shoot it at the range. I get eyeballs on me too. :rofl2: Everybody else is shooting 380's, 9's, and 40's.

:icon18:

That happens to me too. Get the friendly nod/hello when I arrive but when I pull back back my first target I get ethier that look of disappoint/shame or the "hater" look from people with "shotgun" targets. :icon17:

This might be a "Cool story bro" but I have to tell it
One time I had a guy give me **** for having a tacticool gun (my H&K USP 45 Tactical that had a weapons light). Also accused me of getting a gun because it was in a video game. He pulled back his target and he was proud of it (he was shooting a Glock). At least all of his shots hit the silhouette but no grouping at all. I pulled mine back, which was farther away, and there was big hole where the center of the target used to be. I cleared my throat to get his attention. The look of shock on his face was epic and his buddy tried not to laugh.

The story gets better and this part is for you Ghost. ;)
The two guys were Marines. I was in the Navy at this point and couldn't resist informing him that he was out shot by a Navy guy, more specifically a Nuke ET (Nuclear Power Electronics Technician) . For those who don't know, Nuke ETs are considered the egghead/nerds of the Navy. At this point his buddy lost it and preceded to give him **** the rest of their time there. As they were leaving I over heard the buddy saying he was going to tell every one about what happened. :rofl2:

For the record the other Marine was a good shot.

My Ruger Redhawk 44 Mag gets a lot of attention too. Especially when I shoot the 350 Grain +P+ rounds my dad made for it. :bowrofl:

My delton was $599 or $699 I can't remember.

Either way it's my favorite. Have a buschmaster, dpms, and sig as well.

Right now I'm eyeing an M&P-15 for $649

Unfortunately there's no Cabelas near me. I'd have to order online (or go to Delaware which is the closest store) Pay a transfer fee of $60 and another $15 for a background check. If I get it from the same place I got my VP9, I'm hoping they'll cut me a break.

I know sometimes companies have rebates also sometimes

I went to the range for a little more practice I like to think I'm getting better

First one is 9mm from 10 yards.

This one is my friend's 5.56 from 25 yards.

Need to go out to 100 yards with the rifle. It will have a different point of impact. And your groups will open up. :icon17:

Those are not bad for being a new shooter. While head shots look cool on paper, fundamentally, you should focus on the 10 & 10x ring (center mass). From a tactical stand point, a head shot is easier to miss. All the target would have to do is move the head a couple of inches, and no kill shot. With a center mass shot, a couple of inches either way is still putting the target out of the fight.

Chuck33079 06-08-2017 07:35 AM

Honestly, I'm not sold on silhouette targets for practice. I'm partial to NRA Bullseye 25yd targets. I also don't think you learn as much inside of 10yds. Move that target back, and shoot slower.

Rusty 06-08-2017 08:57 AM

At the gun club. We have knock down targets that we shoot at. The range is 25 yards. 5 round targets, 6", 5", 4", 3" 2". Once you knock them down, you can reset them by pulling a rope. That 2" is hard to hit. We've used everything from .22's to S&W 500 on them.

DeliriousClam 06-08-2017 12:07 PM

I know about aiming for body mass. I just felt like doing that. I'm noticing I can't keep the pistol still while aiming though. That something that I'll just have to get used to?

From what I've seen, that comes from two factors, upper body strength and relaxation. A couple of things that work for me, don't grip the pistol real tight and you have to relax. If you try and squeeze the pistol real tight to stop the movement, you wind up creating movement because the arms and shoulders tense up, causing movement, which creates a never-ending cycle. A firm grip and keep the body relaxed will improve your shooting.

Most of us have several thousand rounds of practice under our belts, you aren't going to shoot like Rob Pincus, Steve Reichert or Rob Leatham your first few times (Google the names, you'll understand). It takes time to develop what feels right and for your shooting to improve. If possible, take a course in basic pistol, how to hold, how to aim, in other words, the basics. You'll get there.

The most important thing: HAVE FUN!!!!! :rofl2:

Completely agree, whenever I find myself off target its due to trying to compensate for recoil or gripping too tightly. I usually put the gun down for a second, stretch my hands and relax when I pick it up again. Like magic my shots are grouping again with steady hands.

Some people, myself included, can have a difficult time holding anything as heavy as a gun steady - especially with arms fully extended. With a heavy rifle, I'd be lucky to hit the broad side of a barn at 100 yds without a bipod, sled, or some other means of support. I've heard that shoulder/upper-body exercises will help.

A different stance may help. Should be plenty of info on the Web. Ask your fellow shooters at the range for tips.

Have fun and don't worry about being an expert after a few dozen rounds - hold any of those targets up to your chest and, if you don't panic, you have enough accuracy for home defense distances. :driving:

Most of training for officers revolves around target at 3 to 9 yards because the majority of all shootings happen with in these distance. Rarely will you here or see shoot out with great distance between shooters.

That's when you need to be good at close combat knife tactics.

OldGrayDog 06-08-2017 06:24 PM

So first as other said take your time, you hit paper and you are alive. Not bad results for first time. Practice and take some classes.

For the rifle.. learn to use the sling for support. You will always be glad you did.

A good easy shoulder exercise is to take a 5 lb dumb bell in each hand. Start by holding them straight down. Swing straight out level with your shoulders with out bending your elbows. And hold for for a count of ten. Repeat 10 tens. As you get stronger. Hold longer, and a higher rep.

For the wrists. Get a piece of pipe long enough that you can with both hands. Tie about 4ft length of string to it. On the other end of the string. Tie a 1 lb weight to it. Hold the pipe straight from you shoulders. On twist the pipe to pull the weight up. Once to the top. Untwist the pipe to lower the weight. Repeat 10 time. Once you get stronger. Increase the weight and number of times.

Think the stats are something like less then 7 yards, less then 7 shots, and about 3 seconds per shooting.

Interesting article but your link is broken. Try this: http://www.luckygunner.com/lounge/ho...a-rifle-sling/

I'll have to try this. I have slings on several of my guns but have only used them for carrying. Thanks.

My friend's Ruger 557 that I was using didn't have a sling.

Sorry for broken link , I was taught using slings as part of getting a stable "shooting platform" when young (yes I was young once). It was part of marksmanship training at schools rifle club, taught by aftc instructor. Took son to Appleseed event , they teach same technique same reasons. https://appleseedinfo.org/programs/
Spend a weekend you will shoot better.

Pistol I was taught single hand bullseye, only much later did I try tactical stances.

Wow! Between bayonet lugs, pistol grips, telescopic stocks, and flash suppressors/threaded muzzles, almost all my rifles would be (unconstitutionally) illegal in NJ. I haven't acquired a grenade launcher ... yet. :)

unfortunately that picture is 100% factual. I'm planning on a simple optic really. And the 15-round max mag capacity is annoying

also, any suggestions on earplugs? I have earmuffs but they get in the way when using a rifle.

I like North Sonic Ear Valves for general use and put on some muffs when shooting louder guns.

Any thing in this class of ear protection is usually fine for most people, but as with anything price is the limit. There are custom molded plugs that cost but feel awesome if you are going to wear for long periods.
