the trick is to go to an empty parking lot, use the parking lines as a curb, and mark in your head where on the hoodline (or whereever) the line comes up to when you are about 3" from the line.

for forward/aft distance, unless you have a rearview camera, use the reflection of your car on the store/restaurant/school window.
