I know where you're going with this and this argument is a total non-starter. Let me ask you a question: do you have friends or family that live in other cities who you only talk to occasionally? Well if you do, Facebook gives you a peek into what they do between those times. When you talk, you have some idea what they've been up to. It can actually make for better conversation because you have a list of talking points.
All of this of course assumes that you use the program for it's intended purpose of staying in touch with your friends, not just adding every drunk person you met at the bar last night and all 450 from your high school graduating class.
