All this talk about re-opening states on the news, because people are protesting? I'm sorry, but it is too damn early to be opening back up. And FCUK the protestors! HEALTH > WEALTH!

From the WSJ:
But the anti-lockdown demonstrations erupting around the country are the canary in the coronavirus mine shaft. Much of America is about to follow them out of the mines.

Here’s why.

The economic imperative is well documented. Economic suicide is not normal behavior, so expect small shops and restaurant franchise owners to start opening quietly, as anecdotes suggest they are.
[...]
Blue states such as New York, New Jersey, Illinois and California can persist with tight lockdowns if they wish, but other, less densely populated states with better coronavirus data won’t wait.

As to the virus itself, it’s impossible to keep regarding it as an unstoppable daily plague. It has to become something we can grasp.

The most persuasive argument for the lockdowns, made by Anthony Fauci and Deborah Birx from day one, was flattening the curve to avoid collapsing the hospital system. Americans by the millions acceded to that suppression strategy and accomplished its goal: Hospital capacity is returning in most major cities. Capacity in other locked-down states never became an issue.
With Covid and the hospitals, we are near an inevitable moment: Covid will be managed like a chronic disease, not as the only disease.

Post-peak coronavirus will be a battle, but it won’t be D-Day. The whole country just did coronavirus D-Day, and we survived. With or without official permission, with or without New York and California, the American people are going to self-release from their coronavirus isolation and get back to business.

These aren’t Trumpian mobs. It is not the rise of anti-science. It is humanity re-establishing social equilibrium. For that, we don’t need instruction.

I have neighbors with zero money coming in. Been out of work since the end of Feb. Self employed. Can't get unemployment in this state. These people was making 6 figure incomes. And have the bills to match. The bills keep coming in. They can't pay them. V to V. What would you do? Try to go back to work, or let the banks take back the house and the vehicles that you worked so hard to get. Tough decision? Until you have been in their shoes. You really don't know on how it feels to tell your kids that they might have to move out of the house.

Exactly. On one hand, you know there is a small chance of catching a disease. If you do catch it, you will very likely survive.

On the other hand, you know, for a certainty, that what you've built over the course of your life, how you feed your family, your pursuit of the American Dream, will be destroyed if you can't work.

Wasn't trying to start a debate and my sincerest apologies if I offended anyone.

My inlaws have their own business also and they, too, have ZERO coming in because of this covid-19 sh!t. I am one of the fortunate few to have a job that pays, and I am helping out my inlaws as much as I can with finances. I've known my father inlaw since I was about 7, as he was my taekwondo instructor and a tough MOFO, but saw him cry for the first time last month because he was in a sticky situation to where he wasn't able to pay for the notes on his company and personal vehicles, the commercial space he has leased out, nor his mortgage.

Before the wifey was diagnosed with severe depression/anxiety this past fall, we were pulling in almost $200k/year, and we were used to a certain lifestyle. Luckily, we didn't live too far outside of our means and were big on saving, but still have our debts. Took a huge demotion and paycut at work because I started law school. The money we were saving as a down payment for a house is nearly gone and the money we had in separate savings has been gone for about a month. What we had in savings took us 10 years to build up and reduced to nearly nothing in a matter of almost 2 months

So I get it. COVID-19 or not, bills are coming in and have to be paid and we still have to eat. I just wish there was a plan to come to a medium compromise to where businesses are opening back up responsibly and where the virus itself is declining. Even with businesses opening back up, I don't think people are comfortable to just going back to pre-covid-19 times.

No offense taken. Except for your going to law school. Are you out of your damn mind?! Both the GF and I are attorneys, for our sins, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone - except maybe JAR.

I appreciate that you can have a grounded rational discussion ab this. Spooler would be shouting ab Wuhan chemtrails and CCP bats in the sky when really he took too much mescaline, while ZCanada would be too busy feklating the Queen to respond.

No problem.

I seen this whole scenario before. I lived. Back in the early 80's. Around here in western Pa. The coal mines and steel mills shut down. Thousands of people were left jobless. The mines and mills never came back. People were making big money with these jobs. Easy 6 figures with overtime. A house, car, truck, motorcycle, boat, guns, etc. The way it happened after lots of friends lost their jobs. First to go was the boat, then the bike, next the play toys, the truck, all of the guns but for one. When it got down to the house that was left. That's when the divorce happened. After that was the suicides. I lost a few friends from that. Seen a lot of good families ripped apart. The saying around here at the time was. "It's a recession when your neighbor gets laid off. It's a depression when you get laid off."

On the news every night was stories of people getting robbed coming out of grocery stories. The robbers wasn't taking the money. They was taking the food. Most of all the victims said the same thing. The robber said that he has kids to feed. He wants the food, not the money.

To me, seeing whats going on around me. Feels like I'm seeing history repeating. And it's following the same time line.

Like I mentioned before, theres alot of people in my apartment complex that cant pay their rent. The apartment managers told me that most of them have never been late on rent and some have been here for several years.
Im already putting together round 2 of care packages and hopefully more people get involved.

I do see it from both points of view, and both sides have valid points. BUT, based on the media (and I get to take this with a grain of salt), protestors are being reckless and we are moving backwards and losing ground to this virus. I'm for opening up businesses, as I will be visiting strip clubs, but, if we are not making progress with this virus, then humanity will disappear. I think both sides should come to a medium.

We had protests in my state capital of Harrisburg the other day. Local news won't show any footage of the protests. The protests only got a 90 second spot on the news. From people that was there. Said that there was a couple thousand people there. You will find very little about the protest on facecrap, twatter, etc.
