Is there a possibility that your 401K gets depleted to zero?

Any finance expert in here.

Hold where you are. It will come back up over time. If you pull out, you loose everything when the market rebounds, and it will.

I was told that about Eastern Airlines back in the 80s. I put 1700 out of the 2K I invested in EAL (based on my uncle's suggestion. He was an EVP at Merrill). EAL went bankrupt 90 days later. :gtfo2:

I bought Ruger stock with the rest and made back the 1700 I lost. It took about 4 years to pull it off though....

Now, I do my own research. The market goes up, the market goes down and you only lose money when you sell.

I'm no expert but, as mentioned earlier, if you sell now, it will just cost more to get back in later.

If we go into SHTF mode, neither your money nor your stock will be worth anything - ie, it won't matter what you do, you're boned.

Spooler 03-25-2020 08:46 AM

One of the stocks I have was trading at 100 to 104 a share. It is now at 78. Not a happy camper.

Too late to do that. I would just ride it out.

Those were different times. I dont remember EAL, but I do remember when you had a crapload of different airlines in the industry. All that competition was sure to squeeze companies out of business. Apple has their niche in the tech industry all to itself with respect to their products (However, Samsung does share that market, somewhat, with a different demographic)
Even with the US Airline industry, there are only a handful of companies, which makes looking over your shoulder much more easier as opposed to back in the day when not only were they looking over their shoulder, but to their left, right and ahead of them.

Got me thinking and now I want to invest a little in jet blue. It's already rebounded 11 percent.

Rusty 03-25-2020 08:58 AM

401k, Vanguard's Index 500, and Primecap. If you can get into them.

Stocks, get one's that pay a dividend. Duke Energy pays a good dividend. You reinvest that dividend back into the stock. You'll end up with more stock.

When Qualcomm first came out. I had a chance to get it for $11 a share in January. By December. The stock had split 4 times. And was up to $44 a share.

Morning all! I am little nervous about my 401k as I am planning on retiring in five years. I am going to ride it out as I have before. If I have to work a few more years that is cool. I feel blessed that I have that option and that my line of business will be solvent regardless of what happens.

Just don't use any TP. Have all the fertilizer in the world. Then sell the TP for bonus money.

The further away from retirement the better off you are, so you young guys should be fine.
1. Don’t count on your 401k as your sole source of income in retirement, as a down turn is always a possibility, we’ve seen it in 09 and now.
2. Diversify, real estate, precious metals, art, pensions, even classic cars. A junk 240z is worth 3-4K and that’s what they cost new !
3. As you near retirement go conservative with your 401 meaning more toward interest only
4. Don’t go into retirement with debt. Have your house and any needed major improvements paid for. Have a good car ( cars ) paid for. And don’t bring any high interest credit card into retirement.

This is a simple plan that works! We started to plan in our mid thirties, my wife retired at 55 and me at 63
People who are dependent on there 401k are now going to be in poor shape as compared to just 3 weeks ago. What dissolved in three weeks could take years to recover

very well said.
Investing young is the key. The rule of 72 will work for the youngins. My mom had me started with IRAs and Mutual funds at 17

For the last 20 years or so, I've had most of my 401k invested in stable stocks/bonds that pay a dividend. Where possible, dividends are re-invested. Once or twice a year, I will take dividends that are not auto-re-invested and manually re-invest them. I don't worry about price changes and I almost never sell a stock as long as it is paying a decent dividend - I'm in it for the long haul.

But that strategy may not work for you. Depends on your situation.

I tried! But JAR has near-total market penetration for gay prostitution rings, Spooler has a lock on cantankerous old man pills, and EW monopolized the chemical weapons production market.

Look into mini dildos. I think FP just injected one the dildo companies with a huge purchase.

Great advice and youngsters need to pay attention. I have a pension and will be debt free when I am done. Pretty much there now. Life happens and my divorce pretty much ruled out paying off my house or owning rental property. Put two kids through college and raised them to be self sufficient was a priority and it worked. The 401k is my get out jail bail money to pay off mortgage or at least make the payments. We will see which is the best financial especially if intrest rates get below 2. I'm not really worried because I have enough to be okay, I just don't want to adjust my lifestyle dramatically! Got to keep that money tree from becoming a money twig!!!

That would be awesome but I doubt that it will be done by then. Also bringing the car to ZDAYZ just after paying for the build is not likely. Coming to ZDAYZ when I bring my car is about 3k for three or four days of fun!

So the plan is to ship the Z to Germany and go FLAT on Flugplatz
