Im in the same boat. The GF growing up poor (they had to get govt. rations just to survive winters), doesnt like to throw things away, she will donate to Goodwilll though. But I can look around as I sit, and see more than a handful of stuff we dont need..
She really hates to throw away food. She says its habit from growing up. If you didnt eat what little food you had, you starved...
I have to go through the refrigerator regularly to check on old stuff.

Well I can understand her point of view, I remember you said she came over from Russia where I remember back in the 70s the bread lines and empty store shelves, so yeah I get it !
Back in the 80s we owned a 900sq. ft. house no garage, & no money and I realized back then with a job, roof over our heads, refrigerator full of food, 2 cars we were still better off than 80% of the world ! This is really a consumer based economy and I've fallen for it ! Now it's so great to look at the Sunday paper ads and realize I DONT NEED ANYTHING

My parents went through the depression. My dad grew up on a farm. They didn't throw anything away. Fixed it and reused it. Ate everything off an animal. Nothing went to waste. My mom, had it somewhat easy. Her mom worked on the river boats on the Ohio, and Mississippi rivers. So they had an income. Growing up like that. Mom threw everything away. So, I'm a mixed bag of the two. Keep it, and throw it. I know what you are going through.

What makes thing worse, is that the gf grew up playing with those russian dolls that open up and there are more dolls inside that also hold more dolls. So now, she has this quirk where if if something looks like it can be used as a storage/holder for something, shell keep it and find stuff to put in it....but it has to fit perfectly..l shes OCD in that way..lol

People who went through depression did everything themselves. No one had any money. You had to learn a lot of different skills to survive.People where very independent and pride full.

Now days people feel like they are owed things just for being alive.

So few people do there own work anymore.A lot of do it somebody elsers.

I think I should be owed reparations for my parents having to go through the depression.

That's why they are referred to as the Greatest generation, they did without, survived & prospered ! No snowflakes there

Side note: read last week a college somewhere in the US was removing analog clocks, cause the students were complaining they couldn't read them

That generation accomplished alot.

The baby boomers screwed up with raising their kids and it's snowballing.

I learned a lot of different skill sets off of my dad. Him growing up dirt poor on a farm. Everything was done by hand just about. If it broke, you fixed it. There was no throwing it away and buying a new one. Didn't have the money to do that. At the dinner table. My dad would eat anything in front of him. Never turned anything down either. My daughter used to call my dad, Pap Pap Pack Rat. And my mom, Grandma Throw it away.

I have to go through the refrigerator regularly to check on old stuff.
Been there, done that. It wasn't quite gov't hand outs, but we didn't have much and combined with parents that grew up in the Depression... well, you get the idea. lots of hand-me-downs (which is really kinda odd because I was the oldest and only boy...)

I have a hard time tossing things, partly because of the way I was raised and spending time in the Marines. Hell, we got Army cast offs for equipment and we were still using radios & systems built in the 50s... and it was the late 80s...

I dont care what anyone says gov't "cheese" and the cans of "Pork" were delicious! Cracked me up because the labels were white with black letters and it said, Cheese, Pork. Thats it, nothing else.
Grandparents would pick it up every saturday.
