Most people aren't aware that titanium dust is highly flammable. He was briefly engulfed with flames.

Dave has this thing for attracting fire. When we did construction together, he set the fringe of his jeans on fire with a roofing torch. While welding a beam over head, he dropped enough sparks to burn through his boxers and do the "help help my pants are on fire" dance. Yesterday, he sends me a text. "I just set myself on fire again. Cutting through rebar with a grinding wheel."

*shakes head* Amazing he's still alive.
We all would have brillo pad sized wads of titanium. great for camping and general fuckery at work.
There have been a few stories of machines getting torched because of chip buildup plus an ignition source.

Fun video. Inconel is the same material used for the cpu's armor in aircraft black boxes.
I woudnt want to be back on the floor, but miss playing with neat toys sometimes.

Inconel is actually what our retorts are made out of. We're heating a high nickel iron alloy to around 2100 ± 50 degrees to align the grain structure for magnetic permeability. Inconel handles a good bit of heat before deforming, so it's been our material of choice for a long time now.

I hate machining it to any kind of tight tolerances. **** seemed gummy+super abrasive and would eat carbide insert faster than a fat kid with a bag of M&Ms.

When I was in the 5th grade, my sister and I had come home from school. She wanted to fry some chicken for dinner. She had the frying pan with oil heating up on the stove. She went to her room and forgot that she had the stove on.
I was in the living room and hear a WHHOOOSH. Ran to the kitchen and saw the frying pan on fire. Grabbed the frying pan handle, opened the sliding door to the backyard, and while going down the little step, the frying pan handle had melted off and the pan slid off the handle pouring the burning oil onto my my right thigh. Burned through my pants and had me out of school for two weeks. Still have scars from that.

I also dumped scalding water on me as a toddler, and stuck a fork through my cheek. But those are stories for another time..lol

Neat!

When I worked for Elliott TurboMachinery. I worked with a lot of inconels and monels. Hated machining inconel 625. Super gummy. Tear up bits really quick. Gas turbines and some compressors have parts made out of this stuff. We had a few lathe fires from Ti, and magnesium. Worked will a lot of exotic metals. How about preheating a work piece to 1,100F before you could weld on it.
