I disagree about this being a rice mod. As pointed out, the weight, but also, it's like taking a Lamborghini Gallardo and putting aftermarket pipes on it. Sure, you only gain 10hp on 560, but it makes such sweet music. It's a more satisfying mod than removing my Bose sub and adding a 12" speaker and amp. To some it's just noise. To me, it is music. Unfortunately inline 4's don't sound like music unless they spin faster than 10,000 rpm. For that reason, my Yaris, which is lowered, has aftermarket swaybars, shocks and Momo wheels, has a STOCK exhaust.

I will probably try this this weekend when I am doing some other work on the car.

Dropped my muffler today (because of the rear JDM fog install) and drove around.. it's really loud.. but it sounds pretty nice when you get high into the rpms.. lots of droning at 40-45 mph.. haven't gotten up on the highway yet. Will do more driving without it on tomorrow.

We've all come to agreement that taking the rear section off of a stock exhaust sounds pretty darm good.
Just don't try it with a Stillen exhaust. It sounds like CRAAAAAAP! ![]() ![]() ![]() The Stillen rear exhaust section weighs 36.2 lbs! With the rear section removed, the sound is very raspy, similar to how a trombone amplifies the simple vibration of your lips..... the straight pipes (with resonators, headers and cats) amplify each exhaust pulse to make a cacaphony high pitch exhaust harmonics accentuated by a base line of BLAT, BLAT, BLAT! It does pull a nice 3rd gear scratch though. -Phim Last edited by Phimosis; 06-05-2009 at 12:39 AM. |

Dude I think that onboard sounds awesome... like a f'ing race car man. Not that I'd ever run that on the street but dude, sounds VERY MAD.

loving it still lol. just went to a meet and most of the 350 guys where amazed at how good it sounded. also raced a mustang on the way out (which i beat with ease i must say) and man does the exhaust scream!!! hadn't redlined the car like that without the muffler.

Phimosis, I think you need to take into account that you're running HFCs. Point being, I don't think it'd have sounded as raspy if you had the Stillen cat-back hooked up to stock cats, and then removed the rear section. That being said, I don't think it sounded all that bad.
Giving you some rep for doing this little experiment, btw.

I had an 84 Mustang with no cats. when I installed the headers I ran it around the neighborhood with open exhaust. Sounded like a dragster. Pretty cool. I had a '98 4V Mustang Cobra with Kenne Belle supercharger. Ran it with HFC's and open exhaust. Sounded really mean. Way too loud, but awesome sound. With Borla exhaust on it, it was sweet street ride. Point being, I've had experience with other cars with low backpressure exhaust and have it sound great. I like the Stillen exhaust when it's all attached.... just a little quieter than what I like. I like a more racey sound. With that rear section off though, the sound is god awful. The camera microphone just doesnt quite catch how raspy and harsh the sound is. It's literally like someone is blowing a trombone right into you ears. It has so much BLAT, BLAT, BLAT that it reminds me of these guys that have 40's and 50's pickups with flat head V8's and 1.5" straight pipe coming from the headers with no Y pipe or H pipe to equal the pulses. I think a much racier sound can be found without the harsh acoustic qualities. One last thing is that there is no "cackle" on decel with the Stillen exhaust, but it does do it with the stock exhaust with rear section removed. It makes the stock exhaust with rear section removed very sexy sounding. |
