looks interesting!!

Boost_lee 08-17-2011 12:11 AM

sweet!

b1adesofcha0s 08-17-2011 06:52 AM

Awesome! How's it working so far?

roplusbee 08-17-2011 07:07 AM

Awesome. the quest for coolness is looking like it is headed in a successful direction. Looks like that CSF Radiator is in the cards for my build as well, just waiting on the final invoice to begin the install process.

RCZ 08-17-2011 08:56 AM

Hey Ryan, what size are those charge pipes? They look huge...

tranceformer 08-17-2011 09:13 AM

is it done yet?

It's not working yet. Hopefully it will be ready for Cars and Coffe Saturday at the DuPont Registry headquarters.

Don't they!? They are 3". Previous intake pipers were 2.75"/2.5". I we have time, the intake pipes will be powdercoated black.

I'll be going over there today to install the radiator and hopefully pinpoint where the PS leak is coming from. I already know it's coming from one hose, but it looks like there may be multiple leaks now. I just check the PS fluid everyday and add to it accordingly. It's been leaking since the PS pump was replaced.

HKYStormFront 08-17-2011 10:19 AM

if you can get it all squared away, will you be coming up for Z Nationals ryan?

tranceformer 08-17-2011 10:25 AM

am I gonna get a ride in it this weekend?

I'm thinking about it. I'm interviewing for a new job and they said they'd give me an offer by early next week. I'm pretty much going to take it even if it's the base salary because the future opportunities are huge, where as I can't go anywhere at my job and the pay is horrible! So pending the job transition...

I'll be at Sebring for the Chin Motorsports event on Saturday at Sebring. I'll just be spectating though. If I'm not too exhausted, I'll stop by S&R on the way home. You should come down Friday night and come to Cars and Coffee Saturday morning.

b1adesofcha0s 08-17-2011 11:11 AM

Good luck with the interview and the new job Ryan

HKYStormFront 08-17-2011 02:15 PM

it's small but thick (thats what she said) and he's not running much boost so the temps should be fine. The bank 1 Maf is also the IAT so with any OBD II software or the UpRev Cipher logger he can double check.

The intercooler is rated at 550hp. It will do...

The piping is done...With the new 3" intake piping being .25" to .5" bigger, the car won't even idle. Now I'm trying to scramble to find someone with an UpRev cable and find someone who will send me a base map tune. Cars & Coffee is looking doubtful :(

So you went back to the stock MAFS? I thought you had the UPREV MAFS installed. Anyway, Hope you get it straightened out really soon. Was I incorrect by saying that the quest for coolness was looking positive? Sorry of I jinxed things......:ugh2:

dvo 08-18-2011 07:08 PM

good luck with the new job!

New 3" equal length, equal size piping...the way it should have been from the start!
http://i51.tinypic.com/f0as6d.jpg

The intercooler is SO much smaller than the Precision intercooler I had on, so we held off on installing the CSF radiator. I want to see how my coolant temps are now that there will be much more air getting through to the radiator. Good thing is if they aren't any better, I have the radiator sitting in my garage. If they get better, I'll have a brand new CSF radiator up for sale.

The stock MAFs are fine...but Lutz bridged the MAF signals in hopes it would fix their horrible intake piping design. So I believe it's an easy fix to put the wiring back to OEM

I had already planned on it. I'm hoping I can come down next weekend...we will see. The car is still sitting in my friend's garage since it won't idle due to the bigger piping. I'm still trying to get my hands on an UpRev cable so I can remap it.

SPOHN 08-19-2011 06:53 PM

I really like how that looks. I know you'll be so happy now. Waiting for retune.

esfourteen 08-19-2011 08:55 PM

looks awesome ryan, much better!

Armonster 08-19-2011 10:12 PM

Man that is one MEAN looking engine bay.

DIGItonium 08-20-2011 12:40 AM

Your current design is very refined and clean! Hope all goes well for you... must have videos!

christian370z 08-20-2011 01:41 AM

Those massive intakes look gnarly! I second the motion for copious video recording once the Z is fighting fit.

Mr.Squeeze 08-20-2011 08:49 AM

Good Job man with the pipes hope everthing else goes well for you.

98intrigue 08-21-2011 10:41 AM

So we undid the bridging of the MAFs...car starts and holds an idle! It's just really rich...10.9 AFR at idle. An awesome member on here named Joe with a Nismo GTM stg 2 TT let me use his UpRev cable, so I'll hopefully have a base tune so I can drive my car Monday :)

daisuke149 08-21-2011 11:02 AM

nice ryan. :) tune it and b ring it z nationals!

SPOHN 08-21-2011 11:26 AM

Awesome man. Better than running lean.

Any plans to thermal coat the piping and intercooler?

Red__Zed 08-21-2011 11:52 AM

damn those are some pipes

happytheman 08-21-2011 02:10 PM

Wow, but that engine bay looks sooooo sick with the new 3" piping! Hope you get it all up and running soon. You've been extremely patient through this build. I'd never be able to have this much downtime with my Z, but that's only because it's my DD.

Cell 08-21-2011 04:43 PM

So... this isn't a top mount turbo anymore? Sorry but I haven't kept up with the thread and probably will not read through the pages of posts to find out. If someone can fill me in on what has happen then thank you.

It's still a top mount, they redesigned the intercooler/piping setup to equalize the intake tract to the manifold. hotpipe feeding fmic via driver side (lower pipe), cold pipes via top of fmic like the gtm kits.

jran76 08-22-2011 12:52 PM

The intake pipe changes look good. I agree that this is the way it should have been done from the start, but I think you are getting close. It will be interesting to see if the smaller IC lets some additional air to the radiator, and how it does with AIT's.

dirTy_shoeZ 08-22-2011 01:01 PM

z32's started doing top mounts aswell. if theres one thing i hate about twinturbo z's its the location of the turbos.

Mr&Mrs 08-23-2011 05:33 PM

Ryan glad things are progressing, cant wait to see the outcome. If you still have my number give me a call I got a new phone and lost yours. Shoot me a PM with yours again if you dont though I have a few questions.

98intrigue 08-23-2011 08:18 PM

Update: Z1 sent me a base map, which I uploaded tonight...car is still in limp mode unfortunately:mad: I believe this is the same code it threw when I first had my car tuned at S&R and then when it was at Z1.

P010c mass or volume air flow "b" circuit low
P0550 power steering pressure cicuit malfunction

I'll probably powdercoat the intake piping and possible the intercooler black. The downpipe and uppipe are already wrapped with the DEI heat wrap, so I'd rather not take those off to get coated.

It is my DD...I'm just fortunate my parents only live 10 minutes from me and they have a spare car. They have been extremely patient with me, but their patience is running thin...and so is mine :shakes head:

I just texted you.

98intrigue 08-24-2011 12:24 AM

You guys ready for a rant???

Me: "Hey, I need to know how to unbridge my MAFs."
Lutz: "Hold on let me go check for you..... All you have to do is cut the bridged wires."
Me: "That's it???"
Lutz: "Yup."
Me: "Wow, that was easy. Thanks."

Hey Lutz...you suck! I'm so tired of being screwed over by them. Let's document what went wrong...we will just use $100/hr labor rate:
  • intake piping caused the car to not run right since day one ($$$$ I can't even put a price on the headaches this has caused and the amount of money I've spent on tuning)
  • (done by a friend at a cheap rate) to redo intake piping and a new vertical row intercooler ($450 with the intercooler pretty much given to me for free)
  • left passenger side wiring harness hanging with no support to pull away from hot piping. it was left to sit against the passenger manifold, melting all the wires (2hrs of labor to rewire = $200)
  • due to the above problem, 140amp fuse on the battery was blown ($50)
  • uppipe is too close to one of the power steering lines. burnt a hole through the line and caused the pump to seize and the pulley to snap off (2hrs of labor for uninstall/reinstall plus $500 for pump = $700) Do I need to mention the 4 days of work I missed? Or the $200 towing fee? Or the hotel room I had to pay for?
They said they would redo the intake piping for me one time at no cost to me. I also said I wanted a single exhaust. Back in the day by an employee, I was told $700. The same employee told me it would be around that same price. My car sat there for a month. Against my suggestion of redoing the intake piping, they bridged the MAF sensors, which didn't fix anything...granted I didn't get it retuned. It took 2 weeks to get the quote for the exhaust, which was double what I was orginally told. So I said no thanks. I go to pick up my car and it has a flat tire. This ruined my plans of taking it to Orlando for a professional photoshoot. When I returned 6 days later to pick up my car, the tire was STILL flat even though I was told 2 days earlier it was going to be fixed. Also, I was never given back my exhaust gaskets or hardware when they uninstalled my HKS Hi-Power exhaust ($30).

And now the last thing was that I called them to ask how to unbridge my MAFs. They said just to cut the bridged wires. They assured me that it would run just like OEM... does this look OEM???
http://i52.tinypic.com/1z7z3p.jpg

After driving my car home in limp mode from my friend's house who redid my intake piping, I was so excited that a very nice forum member who I've never met named Joe let me borrow his UpRev cable. Jon from Z1 sent me a base map today. I uploaded it with excitement:tup: and then the car was still in limp mode:shakes head: After cleaning the MAF sensors, switching MAF sensors back and forth, and even checking the throttle bodies to make sure they weren't the culprit, I checked the MAF voltage
http://i51.tinypic.com/25g73mf.jpg
Well...that's not right? So I checked the MAF connectors and tried swapping them. Still no voltage to the driver's side MAF. So I cut the protective wiring and saw the cut wires. Real nice tap job!

I won't even tell you the ridiculous price I paid to have my kit made. What's left of Lutz Performance's turbo kit engineering on my car... the uppipe and part of the downpipe. Part of the downpipe had to be redone because when they took my HKS exhaust off, they hacked the downpipe. The intake piping was obvioulsy redone. The band clamp used on the downpipe is leaking for the 2nd time, so that still needs to be replaced. The power steering line next to the uppipe still leaks, so I have to top off the fluid daily.

At first, Lutz treated me like gold. They treated me like a paying customer and I thought they went above and beyond to make sure my car was reliable and I was happy. As soon as I broke down in Georgia on the way home from ZDays back in May, that's when they seemed to stop caring. All they compensated me for was for 2hrs of labor for when they installed the 2 Flexalite fans:ugh2:. It's now August...my car is finally on the verge of running 100%. I don't even want to add up the money I've wasted fixing Lutz Performance's mistakes... because it just upsets me even more. This experience has really pushed my limit of patience and has severely effected me financially. The only thing I can think of to end this story and to somewhat make me think this may have been all worth it... I will be :driving: shortly

Jamaica 08-24-2011 12:30 AM

Ryan ...

that totally sucks.

christian370z 08-24-2011 12:33 AM

Wow. I'm very sorry to hear that Lutz has left you on your own, good on you for taking it into your own hands and diagnosing the problem. My fingers are crossed for you!

Isamu 08-24-2011 12:39 AM

Dude, Lutz needs to step up and stop being douchewads and compensate you some.. i mean it was their fault this all happened in the 1st place... Im pretty sure GTM, or any other quality company would hook you up. sorry you went through all of this, but man, Im really glad to hear your almost at 100%
