First top mount single turbo 370Z

So if anyone hasn't caught on with my title or me dropping hints, it's time to finally announce that I'm doing a single turbo build:happydance:

I've been having boost withdrawals since I traded my single turbo G35 in for the Z. Since October, a local shop had been toying with the idea of building a twin turbo kit for the 3.7L. I showed some interest, but there was no way I could afford it. Back in February, we talked more about it and it came closer to a reality...but I was still weary on spending so much money.

When I contacted Shawn @ Speed Freak Fabrications/Lutz Performance to get a quote on an install, he mentioned he could build me a single turbo kit. As soon as he said single, I was sold! I met Shawn a few years ago when he was building a single turbo kit for my friend's M Coupe. I'm glad we've stayed in touch since, because I coudln't trust anyone else to fab up something like this.

The build list includes:
Precision billet 6262 turbo .82 a/r
Precision 750 intercooler
Tial Q BOV
Tial MVR wastegate
Deatschwerks 600cc injectors
Walbro 255lph fuel pump
Z1 25-row oil cooler kit
JWT oil pan spacer
ACT 6-puck clutch
Fidanza flywheel
Z Speed HD CSC kit
Innovate Wideband
Blitz SBC ID-III

Here are some pictures of the build so far

I agree. Only thing that concerns me is the bracket for the turbo. I would have thought you would need a little more support to hold the turbo then just that. either way i have a feeling this is going to be epic and help so many because there are alot of people looking for the single turbo setup and just never pulled the trigger since STS (i want to say) was the only one making them and they were a little high in price. I am loving it though. welcome to the family and try to get your garage on the forum to answer some of the communitys questions.

Vegitto-kun 05-03-2011 02:11 AM

I wonder what is the difference between single turbo and TT?

TT just gives more power?

Reality 05-03-2011 08:40 AM

Dam! Single 6262 should be a beast on the 3.7L..

GL OP!

Lemers 05-03-2011 08:46 AM

Different thinking there.

fairladyZ34 05-03-2011 08:52 AM

Hey guys, I'm Shawn, the one doing the build on Ryan's car. Happy to be making Ryan's visions a reality. I appreciate everyone's comments, looking forward to the results with the 6262 and the 3.7l motor!

lol you need to take a peak at an ///M car, the logo is the M badge with different colors. BMW's are our thing, outside of a twin scroll sidewinder GT35R Evo 8 I did awhile ago, this is the first Japanese car I've touched. I like a change of pace from time to time, I've known Ryan for quite a few years and was happy to help him out with his one-off build

Area under the curve should be outrageous with this setup!

Twin's (smaller) will typically give more power band but less peak power, single will give less area under the curve but higher peak. In this case, the pretty small 6262 on the 3.7l should have more powerband and higher peak than the twin kits I've seen. The 6262 with this a/r should start to taper off up top past 600-650whp. 96 a/r should support up to the mid 700whp range, higher than that you would need to jump up to a 6765. Ryan is looking for the most powerband maxing out around 550whp for now on the stock motor.

finally dropping the bomb, awesome! I agree that turbo bracket looks surprisingly small, I would get them to revise that for piece of mind.

theDreamer 05-03-2011 09:47 AM

In for results.

m4a1mustang 05-03-2011 09:47 AM

Will it be ready for ZDayZ?

JB-370z 05-03-2011 09:55 AM

This is insane! Good work, cannot wait to see the results and see a video!

Cell 05-03-2011 10:05 AM

This isn't my first rodeo, the manifold is supported in quite a few places on top of being made from sch.10 SS. The only reason the bracket shown exists was to support the turbo as I got started with the manifold. You could remove it completely and the turbo would go nowhere. The only reason I will be keeping it is because of the v-band exhaust housing. V-band flanges do not support weight as a T3 or T4 flange would. The weight focuses itself on one point on the radius and will eventually crack without an unusual amount of support.

Precision PT74 on my M-Roadster supported by the manifold only, 30k miles later, still right where I left it ;)

JordoKAP 05-03-2011 11:45 AM

If they made a complete single turbo kit for $6,000. I'd buy that all day vs the rotex gtm supercharger kit.

I'm about to order my gtm stage 1 supercharger hopefully tomorrow.
