Hey, I'm working with Max at Stillen and I have put my deposit down. Cable should be in today/tomorrow. I have made it clear that I won't be buying it until the Warranty is finished. I hope this happens soon!!

We are working very closely with the warranty company and we are pretty much dialed in. They just want us to pass the CARB testing and we'll be good to go.

I asked if it was a inline fuel pump or a in-tank fuel pump you JACKA**, I couldn't find a description on the forums or Stillen's website. The only description on the forum is: High Output Fuel Pump (very informative).

It is an in-tank fuel pump. It replaces the existing OEM fuel pump. Nissans do not use an inline fuel pump with the VQ platform.

I don't want to state how much Sam shelled out for this service but it was by no means cheap at all. I think I told RCZ about this a while ago, there is no reason to lie about this info people. Yall will soon find out, I promise :)

There are definitely companies who offer services like Sam describes. Although, I'm not sure if they have the ability to approve the results for CARB though. We've never had to look into this as we've always done our own testing. I'm sure there are advantages to doing it this way when you've never dealt with CARB directly before or if you have limited man power /time to handle the testing yourself. Fortunately we have been working with CARB for many, many years on various parts like intakes, superchargers, headers... We have a lot of experience with CARB and know what it takes to get the job done. Also, the Manager of our service department is an ASE certified/licensed smog technician who is constantly kept up to date with new laws and regulations affecting smog related parts.

We are also very fortunate to have such a close relationship with NISSAN and directly with the OBD II systems manager for Nissan North America. This is the guy that handles all of the emissions testing for NISSAN North America. We are able to pick their brains and ask them a lot of questions while we develop our systems...For example, one interesting thing we learned about the VQ37 is that the plastic intake manifold was never intended to see more than 4 psi...

In regards to Sam beating us to CARB approval...I don't know if that will happen or not. CARB testing can go very well or very bad. We have heard horror stories of companies having to go through testing four or five times, sometimes more, before their kit is approved. If you fail one test, you have to repay and reschedule for another test. The tests themselves only take a few days but they are not cheap. Also, CARB can sometimes take awhile to approve systems and get the paperwork through all the necessary steps. Some parts will take a few weeks, some parts will take a few months, or even a year or more...

Kyle, what is stillens take on the intake manifold pressure? As a N/A vehicle of course the manifold was not purpose built for FI. I know GTM has already pushed the intake manifold psi into the mid teens and made over 600rwhp... What is stillen's stance on intake manifold performance and capabilities?

Sam @ GTM and I discussed the use of a gtr manifold and if we see issues with the stock Mani then we will cross that bridge with GTM's adapter when we get there :tup: that is def an option if you want it JB

There is no doubt that the factory intake manifold can flow enough air to produce good power numbers. I would imagine someone like yourself in search of 1,000 horsepower will want to go bigger but for the average guy (even above average in some cases) the plastic intake manifold will be sufficient in terms of power production.

Our concern comes from durability over extended periods of time. What happens after hundreds or thousands of heat cycles and high pressure? This is what we learned from NISSAN. Perfect example, the GT R. On the GT R they use a cast aluminum intake. The reason that they told us is because they did not trust the long term durability of the plastic manifold. In regards to the Z they specifically told us that the plastic intake manifold was never intended to see more than 4 psi over extended periods of time. Their concern was not in relation to performance, they were only concerned about cracking the manifold.

I'm going to let something out that I perhaps shouldn't and I'll probably get my hand slapped for it but I think it's good information. At last year's SEMA show one of my goals was to find and meet with a company who could manufacture plastic intake manifolds. We wanted to find a company similar to the one that NISSAN uses who could produce the manifolds for us out of plastic. This would have reduced the cost substantially as plastic parts are obviously much less expensive than cast aluminum and they wouldn't have needed any machine work or finishing powder coating or polishing...It would have been a lot cheaper and easier for everyone!

After talking with a couple of different companies and after our engineer's talked with the Nissan engineer's. We decided that for durability and increased life expectancy, we would stick with cast aluminum. It is no doubt more expensive and more time consuming but with cast aluminum there is no concern about cracking.

Thanks Kyle! Has stillen done any extensive testing in regards to manifold endurance? From my knowledge there are other companies such as GTM who have vehicles which daily 12, 13, and even 14+ psi on the stock manifold with no issue.

Yes, you are correct my goals are much more than that of the avg enthusiast. But we are discussing the capabilities of the stock intake manifold. I personally would like to run the GTR mani just for the ease of mind and the fact that it's "flow dynamics" are taylored to that of FI.

On a side note is stillen working on a intake manifold for FI outside of your SC kit?

No, there really is no way for us to do that. We are relying on the word of the NISSAN engineer's. How they come up with the 4 psi number, I have no idea to be honest. I imagine they have testing chambers for these parts and I'm sure they have computer based stress analysis programs that can simulate these conditions and do the testing for them.

They told us that their concerned with more than 4 psi running over a few years like that.

i find it interesting that a Nissan engineer would refer to it as a plastic intake manifold when every technical document i have read from Nissan regarding the intake refers to it as a nylon piece. Before someone points out that nylon IS plastic, i know this, however nylon is far stronger (especially the blend used in the auto industry) than your standard piece of plastic, and Nissan seem to go out of their way to point this out.

As far as GTM going far above 4 psi on the stock intake, don't forget GReddy, and i believe AAM have as well. i haven't heard of a failure yet, and the G37's have been boosted for a couple of years now. You can also look at other non Nissan vehicles that use the same Dupont technology for intakes as well as charge piping on a variety of factory engines, including turbo diesel engines.

Basically for anyone other than bullitt, and maybe a couple other insane folks looking for that kind of HP. i'm sure the factory nylon intake will not have issues. High boost, and high hp may be a different story.

Technically, the intake manifolds are made out of a material called Polyamide 6. You are correct that it does fall into the nylon family however you are not taking a look at the most important aspect of this material...What is its intention and how was it engineered?

Polyamide 6 is a very versatile material and can be used in many applications, for example. It is also the same material used in radiators. However, radiators actually use a material designated PA66-GF30 which is a stronger material due to the addition of the 30% glass fiber construction. Radiators use this material because they see....pressure....as well as heat. To stand up to the pressure the radiators use internal and external ribs to prevent cracking. For reference sake...research Nissan Titan radiator crack...The Nissan 370Z intake manifold is constructed out of PA6-GF30. This material is good for high temperature working conditions but is not intended to see very much pressure.

So we've answered the first question, what is its intention? Well, the intake manifold is intended to see high temperatures obviously in its environment directly above the engine. But, on a naturally aspirated engine it is not intended to see pressure. Which is why NISSAN told us the intake manifold was not intended to see more than 4 psi.

The other thing to consider is the engineering that goes into something. Just because you take a material that has the properties you're looking for does not mean it is 100% perfect for the job if it was not designed to do that job. What I mean by that is, take a piece of wood...That wood might have great strength at 1 inch thick. But, if you introduce pressure to that weight then the 1" thickness is no longer sufficient. Now you need to add internal ribbing or other support structures to hold it up. It's the same principle for an intake manifold, or radiator, or anything else...

NISSAN engineer's developed the factory intake manifold to work in an NA environment...Which is exactly what it does, and it does a great job at that. They did not intend for that manifold to see boost.

Yes, there are other appliations that are using these materials for intakes or other pressurized systems, however they are designed that way from the factory, from the beginning. The engineer developing that part is making sure that it can stand up to the task of seeing that heat and pressure. The Nissan 370Z came from the factory N/A so NISSAN chose the best material for the job.

I'm sure by now you have done the research to see that the Titan radiator's have a high failure rate. Some people can go 10-15K on one...Others are getting over 100K on their radiator...My radiator blew out at 35K. I'm not saying that the minute someone introduces boost to their car that their intake manifold is going to explode into a million pieces. I am merely passing on information that we have received from NISSAN that they are concerned about these manifolds seeing over 4 psi for long term durability.

P.S.- I know I'm not going to sway the opinion of someone who introduced himself to Josh at our open house event as "the guy who talks #### on the STILLEN supercharger." This information is for everyone with an open mind...

Cosworth makes a really nice intake for the VQ35DE, maybe some day down the road they will make one for our cars if you guys start asking for one. Obviously no need for it on the Stillen kit though.

Here is a photo of the STILLEN 3.7L Supercharger components as has been requested. This is the polished version as you can see by the polished supercharger in the center.

As you can see from this photo a lot of pre-assembly is done with this kit before it's boxed and on it's way. There are 32 individual components in the main supercharger assembly, including the brackets, pulleys, belts, etc. I'll get some photography of the backside of that assembly to show the additional parts.

Also the intercooler comes pre-installed into the intake manifold, along with the fittings, etc. We're easily saving 2-3 hours of installation time by our pre-assembly of major components.

My car is bone stock. Besides the supercharger kit and ECU tune, what else would I need to swap out to be able to get this supercharger running in my Z? (new exhaust?, clutch? etc)

I can't believe I missed Adam Carolla at the open house. I knew I should have gone earlier in the day!!!

Ideally a cat-back exhaust.. and we'd also recommend an engine oil cooler, an auto trans cooler as well if it's an automatic transmission.

That will put you at 515hp just by bolting everything up.
