Generally windows that can darken contain tiny filaments that adjust their alignment via electric current to block out light to varying degrees. I don't think it acts like window tint, however - meaning you wouldn't be able to see out anymore than see in.

In regards to the OT, this would be a cool mod if I finally get fed up with being pulled over for only having my front plate on my dash. 4 months so far and no problems though - it even gave one officer an excuse to hand me a ticket for that instead of speeding. (loss of my license speeding, no less!!)
LCD...

"Its unique LCD-like VALiD™ lens construction permits the tint to change from light to dark in as little as 1/10th of a second when the internal liquid crystals are activated by two included CR2032 batteries that provide up to 200 hours of use."

besides LCD is pretty much what you are describing above - pass a current through it and the crystals re-alignt themselves...

..... and who's to say LCD can't be laminated like a windshield?

Back on topic though..... has anyone tried an R/C servo to stow a plate?

Easier would be a LCD film. Just like self-dimming mirrors.

opps....I should read down all the way before posting. 8-)

I was reading Import Tuner at Barnes and Nobles earlier today (I think it was IT, it was some random car magazine) and I stumbled upon this:

TricPlate.com

This might be handy for some people for their rear license plates. A little bit pricey though.

Yea it's like what others were thinking about for window tinting. You flip a switch and the glass over the license plate goes opaque. A guy I know has one - and he's used it too (Super Speeders) hope I don't get in trouble posting that link :P
