Why is the trunk so shallow?

I agree, the trunk seems deep but its not. After loading up some groceries I try to close the trunk but the groceries end up getting sandwiched between the base

I agree, the trunk seems deep but its not. After loading up some groceries I try to close the trunk but the groceries end up getting sandwiched between the base and the trunk lid. I get scared sometimes when closing the trunk lid with something in the back because the trunk is so shallow that the luggage I put in pops right out through the rear windshield as I close the trunk.
