The 370Z Weight Reduction Thread

The point of this thread is to create a list of the weights of different stock parts and aftermarket parts for everyone's reference. People can post up what they are doing to reduce weight and ANY information about the weight changes achieved. The aim is to create an extensive list. I'll keep track of this thread as much as possible to keep the list up to date.

Excellent thread. I will be watching and contributing....

Nice, this looks like a useful thread that will hopefully get stickied.
Maybe for those who have bought their 370Z already, we can get a weight on spare tire and jack/tools. Thats one of the easiest places to drop weight.
Also, some one should try to weigh the stock wheels and tires, as this is another good place to save weight. My estimates would be 24-25 lb front wheels and 27-28 lb rear wheel but I'm just guessing.

I'm going to probably leave the stock 19in wheels, (the weight isn't that bad) but the tires weigh 30 Lbs each! Those have got to go!

Any update on the weight of stock 18" and 19" wheels?

TomatoEvo 01-05-2009 12:58 PM

Oh hell yeah. I'm glad to see this thread here!

I will reserve my spot on this thread for when I get my 370Z. I have a set of scales and a box full of tools!

Good stuff. Is the weight of one of the exhaust systems incorrect? The weight savings should be 19.8 lbs, right?

sensi09 01-11-2009 03:59 AM

According to tirerack, for the Bridgestone RE050A, a 245/40/19 weighs 29lbs and the 275/35/19 weighs 30lbs.

So the front wheel weighs, 23.2lbs and the rears weighs 26.8lbs.

Perhaps the scales are off, but Nissan did advertise these wheels as 20% lighter. Not sure which wheels they were comparing to, but that doesn't look to hold true from this info.

sensi09 01-11-2009 04:04 AM

On the bridgestone website, the 275/35/19s are listed at 33lbs.

TomatoEvo 01-11-2009 09:21 AM

^^^ Thanks for doing that sensi09, rep for you for being proactive. I was just about to post that info up as well.

What this means boys and girls is that a set of CE28's in the same sizes will probably save us around 20 lbs total. In 18's we'll probably see a 25 lbs saving. (Just a rough estimate, so plz correct me)

Namir 01-11-2009 11:13 AM

23.8 lbs for a 19x10 stock wheel isn't bad at all.

Compare to 350z Stock wheel weights
Wheel Version___Front Weight___Rear Weight
Standard 17"_________23.26 ___________24.14
Touring 18" v.1_______26.56___________26.56
Track 18" v.1_________18.19___________18.62
Touring 18" v.2_______24.8____________25.8
Track 18/19" v.2______21.25___________29.50

Will fix, I didn't do the math myself.

And those are what I am getting!! I am just giddy about the upsprung weight being gone....

LiquidZ 01-12-2009 03:54 PM

Wow, those wheels are really light considering they are stockers.

Skaterbasist 01-12-2009 09:58 PM

We are overlooking one area of weight saving for the 370Z: those Akebono brakes.

Since alot of G35 guys ended up upgrading their brakes to the Akebono brakes from the G37, which are exactly the same as the Z34 brakes, they all had a first hand experience at how heavy those rotors really are.

A 2-piece aftermarket rotor would definitely help. Especially since that's all unsprung weight, which has more of an impact on acceleration than other areas of weight.

RCZ 01-12-2009 10:15 PM

My rotors are gonna go almost immediately and in their place will go a set of DBA 5000, I will get the weight of the DBA's in a min.

Ryan@IP 01-13-2009 09:47 AM

There are just wayyy too many wheels to list them here, it will consume the thread. Thats the only reason I havent put them up.

M.Bonanni 01-18-2009 11:29 AM

Ok, took the spare, tools, and sub out of the back of the 370Z to weigh it last night. The pictures are terrible, sorry.

Bose Sub = 8 lbs.
Tools & Mats = 7 lbs.
Spare = 35 lbs.

Total = 50 lbs.

Also, side note. Probably one of the coolest looking spares I have seen, painted black and made by Enkei. :)

frost 01-18-2009 11:49 AM

50, that's pretty decent. Thanks for the effort.

OMGWTFBBQ 01-18-2009 12:17 PM

That IS a pretty fancy looking spare. When I think of spares, I instantly imagine steel hubcaps haha.

Crash 01-18-2009 04:09 PM

That's a heavy spare, but a light sub woofer! I'll be leaving both in. I'm some-what surprised they didn't use the space-saver spare like they did in my 300zx.

RCZ 01-18-2009 04:22 PM

Love how we can drop 50lbs in 1 minute.

Cool for the dragstrip, but it will mess with your handling balance on a road course. For anyone planning on setting their car up for the road course, just make sure you remember to take the spare and tools out of the back BEFORE you corner balance :).

frost 01-18-2009 05:37 PM

I use to watch people with F-bods and other muscle cars drag with spares up front. You already have one, and could pick the other up cheap. You werent allowed to do it, so they must not have put them on till after the inspections.

Thats probably the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Those spare tires are not made to go anywhere near speeds you would see at a drag strip. Hense the reason it wasn't allowed.

I didn't talk to any of them about it, but I saw they they changed the tires, which were obviously the weak point. I wouldn't have trusted the rims for the minimal gain, but more power to anyone who doesnt mind risking their own car.

Surprised no one listed the Battery. So many super lightweight choices out there. Voltphreaks 5 lb batteries to Braille 9-11 lb batteries if memory serves. Thats a good bit of weight to lose epecially for track rats. You take out the stuff DD listed at 50lbs[mats, tools spare etc] and replace the battery with a lightweight one that almost 100lbs less before you even replace the seats, rotors, suspension etc. Just my laymans 2c..Love road racing more that 1/4 mile but have yet to cut my teeth at it at any real track. :ughdance:

wish i could get my hand on one of these cars

I was thinking on my way to work this morning. What if we pulled the spare and moved the battery back there? Wouldn't that alieviate the affor mentioned weight distribution problem?

BTW Cown...lovin the avatar.

Yes, it would definately help.

Side Note: I will try and find a few minutes to weigh the stock battery today.

Please do man, that would be greatly appreciated.

Very good point about the battery change. A braille is definitely the way to go. I will put that up on the thread. Good call Snakebitten. Voltphreaks batteries are outside of our scope. They are $2,000 for 5lbs less weight. At least out of my scope hehe. Rep .

Also Cowned, great name and avatar.

So I'm assuming the stock battery is going to come in at around 45-55lbs. That should offset the weight reduction of the spare, mats and tools. Also Considering Im going to get the 15lbs battery...comes out to over a 100lbs loss between that, the exhaust and the battery. ( Sweet )

Cown3d 01-19-2009 11:22 AM

haha thanks, and Braille batteries are awesome
