With a manual, you can anticipate a corner and select the gear to use, rev the engine and engage at perfect point to get maximum acceleration out of the corner. With an automatic you have to press down the gas and wait for the computer to figure out what you want from it. That loses you seconds.

Actually, the best autos (PDK) are better at this even. Take Randy Pobst who puts PDKs in sport plus and let’s them do the shifting. He’s described them as telepathic and it frees him up to focus that much more on all the other intangibles.

I’ve got a DCT GTI currently and I keep going back and forth on manual vs auto/DCT on my next sports car.

You guys are going on and on about autos being better and being faster and track times. Who cares about that?

I bet you the majority of Z owners, Vette owners, Mustang owners, Ferrari owners, Porsche owners, etc, etc, etc drive their cars on public roads, not race tracks.

The whole point of owning a sports car of any kind and having it as a manual is to be "one with the machine". The thrill of being part of the car that's making it move is all part of the fun and excitement.

I've driven cars like the VW Golf R with its DSG and the Alfa 4C and Giulia Quadrifoglio, both with paddle shifters. All three haul *** and are fun, but still not as fun and exciting as stomping a clutch and throwing some gears.
