Default Yet another oil cooler question (sorry, advice needed)

So I took my new to me Z to a track day a couple of weekends ago. The car is completely stock and I am well aware of the VQ oil temp issues. After about 10 minutes of lapping I was seeing 250~260*+ oil temps. I wasn’t even really pushing the car that hard as I was in the novice group and sessions were paced.

I want to get the Z1 oil cooler kit with the thermostatic sandwich plate, but I need pointed in the right direction of size. I’ve read lots of threads here with people saying that the 25 row is too much on the street and end up taping it down to 19 or so. But is 19 enough for the track?

My plan is to go 3 or 4 times a season once I sort this out and get better rotors and pads. So my car will mostly be street driven. Also, does anyone know at what temp Z1’s thermostat opens up?

You can always block off/cover up excess rows. Get the 25. Painter's tape, or Velcro a sheet of aluminum to cover up some surface area whenever needed.

The thermostatic plate fully opens at something like 180F, while remaining fractionally (something like 10%) opened when below 180F.

I have the Z1 34 row cooler. And never had any problems. Once your oil temps get over 240F. The ECU starts to pull timing before going into limp mode.

I have a thermostatic plate and 34 row oil cooler. I drive year around. The only time I struggle to get it up to 160deg or better is during 32F deg or below. I don't tape anything. It's not an issue.

I drive 3-5 track days a year in my Z. I have a 19 row rad. with 10AN lines and a 185 deg thermostatic sandwich plate. I recently had the uprev tune done and changed the fan settings to go 50% at 200 deg, 75% at 205 and 100% at 210 deg. This helps alot to manage the heat. I drive in the Texas heat all year long and temps at the most get to 205-215 deg. I see 220-235 deg on track driving hard. I have considered going to a 25 row rad, but haven't yet because the heat is managed so well with my current oil cooling setup. The Uprev tune helps too. Food for thought.

Is that coolant temp or oil temp you are referring to?

Either way, very interesting. Increased airflow offsetting the smaller oil cooler size.

I can get my oil temps over 230F with a 34 row oil cooler during a trackday here in Pa. I'm waiting to see what the hood vents will do.

Well, I got my hands on the Z1 25 row kit as mentioned above. I got an excellent deal on here from another member who had the kit NIB and is selling his Z, but never got around to putting the cooler on.

Install was fairly easy, it took about six hours (including going and getting oil) mainly because I recorded the install for my YouTube channel that I’m starting. After I leak checked everything, I buttoned the car up and took er for a spin.

The oil temps never got much above 190 in a combination of pinning the throttle on open parts and in moderate traffic. Usually it would have been at 220 plus.

This is interesting, not a bad idea at all. I did something similar on a R1 I used to own. I was considering Uprev and an administration tune just to get rid of the laggy throttle. But the cost for gain is high because I haven’t done any performance mods....
