Sounds like you have driven it for awhile with the boot ripped. No grease in boot. Wonder how much grit you got inside the joint? If it was me. I would replace the joint. Wouldn't want to take a chance that one of the balls got damage. Chances are you will never see the damage unless you get lucky.
