Default 3rd Gear "tick"

Hey guys,

So I was driving my car the other day and noticed 3rd gear becoming notchier than usual. When upshifting from 2nd to 3rd sometimes I will get a notch or tick that can't be heard but only felt through the shifter. I tried shifting slower and it will still happen. However if I shift to 4th then go to 3rd it is smooth as butter. I picked up some OEM 75w85 gl4 from my local dealership and am going to change the fluid tomorrow. I'm hoping this smooth's out the issue, but I am skeptical that it will.

I really hope a new transmissions not in the future for this car.

Why not use Redline instead of the OEM fluid? Mine was a lot smoother with Redline.

Each set of gears has its own synchos, so going from 2-3 and 4-3 are using different ones. Maybe the one from 2-3 has a little nick or something causing the feeling in the shifter.

I agree in switching to Redline to see if it gets any better...keep us posted.

Well I replaced the fluid in the transmission and there is a noticeable improvement in 3rd gear now. However when the car has sat overnight (on a cold night) it takes a little while to warm everything up. If outside temp is in the 30's the car shifts are slow and 5th gear will scratch( I stay in fourth until the car warms up completely). But once the transmission is up to operating temp it shifts like butter.

I may just order the redline fluid and switch it out to see if it improves cold shifting conditions, it says that it is specifically formulated for our cars and that it helps with shifts in colder environments.

I was going to make a thread regarding this since I'm experiencing the same, except that I currently have Redline MT85 in the car and there are 10k miles on the fluid. As of the past 2 weeks I noticed that 3rd gear was notchier than usual and although it never grinded, it did feel noticeably different than other gears. It would not only make the "tick" noise that you describe but I could also feel it going into 3rd differently than the other gears. Not sure how to describe it.

So I'm actually doing the opposite of you and putting in the Nissan 75w-85 fluid to see if that helps. I'm hoping it will.
