The reason why the hoses are on top of the cooler is that when you shut the engine off. Most of the oil will drain back into the engine sump.

The reason why the hoses are on top of the cooler is that when you shut the engine off. Most of the oil will drain back into the engine sump. So when you start it up again. That oil has to flow back into and through the cooler before it gets into the engine. So there is a chance that you will be pushing air/foam through the bearings. Some have the cooler mounted the with hoses on the bottom with no problems so far. But why take a chance. As for the oil change. There is not that much to worry about.
