I just don't see the need. A drain plug magnet can tell you if you already have a problem but doesn't do much preventive-wise. Most of what the magnet catches,

I just don't see the need. A drain plug magnet can tell you if you already have a problem but doesn't do much preventive-wise. Most of what the magnet catches, the filter would have grabbed anyway. But it doesn't hurt - if it gives you some peace of mind, go for it.
