Apparently my DMM must be too slow to see the cranking amps through the clamp. It does work for DC, I could see the amps moving around in a reasonable

It does work for DC, I could see the amps moving around in a reasonable range as I turned headlights on/off, etc. But I tried to measure engine start 3 times, and the highest it ever briefly flicked to was 18A, which is way too low.
