No you did the cabling correctly. It's "always on" so that the compass memory does not get reset everytime you turn off your ignition/accessory power source; also useful for keeping

It's "always on" so that the compass memory does not get reset everytime you turn off your ignition/accessory power source; also useful for keeping your home-link memory settings as well

The mirror will not kill your battery. It takes very very little power.
