When I wrote this article I had no idea it would become this popular! I am very happy so many people have been able to do their own spacers with this article as a reference!
Thanks to AK for a great forum and great members who support members!! :worship: |
just finished up the rear. almost perfect install. writeup was perfect. i had all 4 corners done within a little over an hour.
only problem i ran into was when i went to loosen the locker lug, it was super loose. thought it was weird but payed no attention. as i finished that wheel and was just threading them on semi tight (no torque yet) the damn locker broke in half! i did the other 4 lugs no problem and moved to the other rear. same thing with the looseness on the locker. once i pulled it off and upon inspection, i noticed a hairline crack about 3/4s the way around the locker. i didn't re-install. finished up that wheel and simply love the way the wheels fill the wells now. off to Nissan to get new lockers. i bought the car a week ago yesterday and it has 320 miles on it, so im hoping to not get any ******** from them. ill post pics if anyone would like to see. thanks again for the writeup! http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...Spacers024.jpg http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...Spacers026.jpg http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...kenlugs001.jpg http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...kenlugs002.jpg http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...kenlugs003.jpg |
Those are the incorrect locks, those are designed for a 350Z. Get the correct ones from the dealer or from Infiniti, and make them give them to you for free. It broke off because the studs on the 370Z are longer than the 350Z, hence the lug bottoms out and the top of the stud puts pressure against the top eventually breaking it off.
Here is a thread on the issue. http://www.the370z.com/wheels-tires/...d-lug-nut.html Valid part numbers: 999W2-Z3409 999W2-JT000 The correct part will have a flat washer base like the regular lugs. |
very interesting....
i went in and they ordered them w/o asking any questions. that was a few hours ago before i knew this lil update. im gonna mention this when i pick them up on Wednesday and see what they say. kinda curious now. i really doubt anything would have come from this anytime soon, but im glad i found this early. pretty much crap.. |
At least yours broke such that you were able to get it off easily. Mine broke with the bottom half still torqued down, had to use a special removal tool to get it off. My dealer claimed ignorance since it was a trade from another dealer.

car looks sweet ddanis60! Glad the DIY helped...

Car looks nice, saw one just like it today in Boston. Our first nice day in a while, cars starting to emerge from hibernation. |
yeah i have an old bug and my truck ill drive when the weather isnt awesome enough to go top down, but around here i just get picky and dont wanna get cold. doesnt rain all that often.
i stopped back by nissan and told them about the issue yestersay and they seemed to play pretend interested but i could tell the manager dude didnt care too much. they had one other 370 that i checked had the correct lockers. best part was that they didnt have any reg lugs in stock either so they pulled 4 from their only z and gave them to me. ill get the ordered (and hopefully correct) set in on wed and idk if ill even install them. thanks for the compliment ;) |
thanks for the post. super helpful +1

you are welcome sir! :tiphat:

Completed the install last night. Superb write-up +1 rep points.
Thanks to Chrisslicks on the DIY Rotor removal. Installed H&R DRS Spacer - 10mm front and 15mm rear Here are some thoughts that I would like to share with the Forum from my install. 1. Used cousins lift to complete the work - made the job super easy...watch the clearances to the bottom rocker panel when you lift the car 2. Only have 400kms on the car - so everything un-bolted like a sinch. I found it easier to remove the brake line attachment bracket on the front control arms to manoeuvre. I have no wear on my rotors yet, so I was able to slid the caliper off the rotor without removing the brake pads. Rotors literally fell off the hub 3. 3lb sledge hammer worked like a charm, couple of good wacks and the lugs were free. Used the nut technique and put a socket over the end to protect the threads (thanks ModShack) as I wanted to keep the old lugs. 4. Try to line up the spline with the old lug spline indentation. Used impact gun to install them and then torqued them all to make sure they where all proper seated. 5. Rear spacers - did not remove the hand-brake asm, just rotated the hub and slipped them in. 6. Whole job - start to finish took about 2 hrs 15mm is perfect in the rear. The outer lip of the tire is perfect lined up with the fender. For those guys you went to 25mm.. yikes the tire would be sticken out pretty far. My cousin ( the mechanic) was concerned about the paint chipping on the fender edge. Anybody have any feedback on accelerated wear due to offset tires? Maybe clearbra might help? |
:tiphat: happy to help!

How long should this take? For the H&Rs with replacement studs? My shop is quoting me an hour per wheel, that seems timely based on the DIY instructions. This shop has done great work, CBE and HFCs with no problems at all and a good price.
Thanks |
With a lift I would think they could do all 4 wheels in under 2 hours but that's just my guess - after I did the first wheel, the other 3 took me under an hour each and I didn't have a lift.
|
I did the job a few weeks ago with a lift and it took around 2 hours total. The shop is probably playing it safe quoting your an hour per wheel. My car is very new and everything unbolted easy, no heat or extra leverage required.
|
Ok thanks guys. It wasn't a firm figure for the quote, more than likely the total bill is less.
|
If anyone is interested in a set of H&R 20mm I am letting them go....... http://www.the370z.com/1013971-post1.html

beside the looks, does spacer provide any better handling or ride

My grin factor went to x12...

Took my z to the local shop today to get my swift springs and h&r spacers installed (15f20r) and they quoted me $150 for the springs and $560 for the spacers. I asked politely why so expensive on the spacers (knowing beforehand it would take about 2 hours without a lift after reading this diy) and they said that EACH spacer would take 2 HOURS to install :icon17: I think ill give it a shot this weekend. Thanks for the write up yall.
|
Btw, can this be done without an impact driver?

Glad I could help! Enjoy the new look.

$560 for install of spacers...way too much. I had mine done for $125.
|
I think 125 is too much. A lot of good mechanics charge 45 to 60 an hour. I'm not a certified mechanic but I know what I'm doing and had all 4 done in slightly over an hour. Without a lift and using an impact. Doing one complete corner at a time. Just saying. Ask them why in the crap it's so expensive. Justify that amount. Idk.
|
That is fast! Are they bolt on's or stud replacement?
|
stud replacment. i think i was like an hour and 20 or something. first time doing it too.. its extremely easy if you have the tools and common sense
|
That is fast - I wasn't working really hard and didn't know what to expect the first time through. I could probably do one spacer in under an hour without an impact wrench. Once I started doing it, I basically took most of the day - I enjoy working on the car so I take my time. :)

I have the 15mm & 20mm spacers (of course) as well as the SWift Springs. I just put the summer stock Rays back on yesterday. The negative camber from the drop plus stock does reduce the flushness of the spacers by a small amount. I will get pictures up soon. It looks like you could easily go 20mm front and 25mm rear and still have lots of clearance. I haven't driven much with the new setup yet, so I will have to see if I experience any rubbing issues. I think that I will stick with the 15 & 20 setup though.
|
20mm & 25mm will work on stock sport rim tires with Swift. Just had mine installed last night and the bro's is being installed this morning. I will not have pics until the springs settle. But if you check out the swift thread I believe someone has that setup with pics.
