DIY: ** Rear 20mm stud replacement spacers

OK!!! I know everyone wants to get the scoop on this so let's get started.

First of all, this is a VERY easy mod, no troubles what-so-ever!

I won't cover the basics like wheel or brake caliper removal as they're already covered in other DIY articles.

http://www.the370z.com/diy-section-d...ent-front.html

http://www.the370z.com/diy-section-d...r-install.html

Let's focus on the stud replacement!

1) Get a good set of wheel spacers and studs like these H&R 20mm's from Josh at Stillen

http://www.the370z.com/members/wheee...ar-spacers.jpg

2) Remove the wheel and brake caliper and then remove the adjustment cover on your rotor. ** If your wheel rotates freely with the hand brake off, you do not need to adjust this star adjuster** If it does not move freely, back off the star adjuster a couple of clicks with a screwdriver to loosen the park brake. Count the clicks so you can reset it on re-assembly!

http://www.the370z.com/members/wheee...-tensioner.jpg

3) Remove the rotor and your rear brake assembly should look like this.

http://www.the370z.com/members/wheee...or-removed.jpg

4) Remove the tensioning spring holding the brake shoes together.

http://www.the370z.com/members/wheee...-tensioner.jpg

5) Remove the star wheel assembly carefully, it is two pieces and will fall apart.

http://www.the370z.com/members/wheee...eel-spacer.jpg

6) Screw on the M12 x 1.25 open ended lug nut and tap out the old studs.

This is a pic from the front rotor but same idea....
http://www.the370z.com/members/wheee...p-out-stud.jpg

Slide new studs through from the rear and on a slight angle into the hub.

http://www.the370z.com/members/wheee...tuds-angle.jpg

7) Tighten down the studs as you replace them. Use a bunch of washers and and open ended lug nut to pull them into seated position on the hub. M12 x 1.25 nut is required. Use an electric impact drill to seat them easily.

This picture is from the front assembly, but you get the idea!
http://www.the370z.com/members/wheee...rs-spacers.jpg

http://www.the370z.com/members/wheee...place-them.jpg

8) Reinstall the star wheel and spring tensioner.

http://www.the370z.com/members/wheee...-tensioner.jpg

9) Replace the rotor and readjust the star wheel for proper tension. Add a layer of 'never-seize' to the back of the spacer and mount it on the rotor. Use two open ended nuts with washers to tighten the rotor into place. Replace the brake caliper.

http://www.the370z.com/members/wheee...ke-caliper.jpg

10) Remount the wheel!!

http://www.the370z.com/members/wheee...ount-wheel.jpg

That is it! No big deal at all.
Rep points appreciated if you found this helpful!

Glad to help! I sweated over this mod for months before I got the parts in to actually do it. In the end it was no big deal! Feel free to down a pint of Fosters for me!!

Thanks for the rep points everyone! :tiphat:

:icon17: I used to love the stuff! But then again, it was the Canadian version brewed by Molsons.....

Paul_S 04-10-2010 05:21 PM

Great info :) I might end up doing this myself and now I know what I need to do :)

Those are the proper spacers. :)

Thanks for the write-up!

Did you use an impact drill for this mod and if so which one do you have? Also, I'll go search for this in a minute but if you also did a write-up for the front spacers could you link to it from the first post or put a link in here somewhere for everyone?

Oh, and nice hammer - did Thor stop by to help with the install. :)

:icon17: I used a Cdn Tire "Maximum" cordless impact driver. 1/2" drive with a 21mm impact socket. The driver is 14.4v NiCD and did a great job as it is a maximum 102ft/lbs force. Went really quick.

As for the front spacers, it has been covered many times. Here is one link.

http://www.the370z.com/diy-section-d...r-install.html

The one difference I had was that you don't need to mod the shield to fit the bolts thru...

http://www.the370z.com/members/wheee...tud-behind.jpg

http://www.the370z.com/members/wheee...into-place.jpg

Go to my Mod Album to see all the pics for the front install.

As for the hammer... it is a 3lb sledge that is EXTREMELY handy to have around in tight spaces with limited throw. It packs a nice punch with one small swing! Thor would approve....:bowrofl:

Yup!

Thanks Modshack! That means a lot coming from you.

ZForce 04-14-2010 02:31 AM

Nice write up. I will be adding your thread to Modshacks on the DYI library of threads. Still think 20 mm Fr and either 20mm or 25mm Rr will look the best. It’s all a personal preference. Trying to make time to try all the combo sizes and get some decent shots to post up.

Now you need to drop the car.

Rep points coming your way.

wheee! 04-14-2010 09:27 AM

I agree that it is personal preference on the widths. I like the 15 and 20 look. As for the dropping, it is not such a good idea around here as this car will be driven in the winter too and it needs the clearance....

ZForce 04-14-2010 11:21 AM

Good point, forgot there are areas where the roads are not too friendly to lowered cars. Which is why I am still out for results on the H&R springs. I have Eibachs in hand awaiting for install.

Another thing to consider for those looking into wheel spacers and lowering springs, is to have the springs installed FIRST, to see how much room you have left for wheel spacers.

ZForce 04-14-2010 11:26 AM

OT: I like your Black Cherry Z34. The bro had the InterLagos Fire on his 06 Z33 and the he just about died when he heard about the Black Cherry coming out for 2010. He settled for the Red this time around. The Black Cherry has class!

LinPark 04-14-2010 12:51 PM

Yeah, I liked the Black Cherry so much I got one too - just love how the thing changes colors depending on the lighting.

Looks like the H&R 25mm doesn't come with stud replacements and is bolt-on only - think I'm going to stick with 15mm front and 20mm rear.

wheee! 04-14-2010 03:28 PM

Thanks for the props. The colour is awesome!

As for the spacers, I definitely think 15 and 20mm is the best for un-dropped cars and that people considering a drop should do that mod first, and check their clearance.

I have no plans for camber adjustments or a drop, so I am very happy with the look I have now. :icon17:

+1 rep to you Wheee!

Holliday 05-06-2010 01:13 PM

Could you share your resources? I was hoping to find out where you got your spacers from? Thanks in advance~!:tiphat:

PS- Nice write up!

ChrisSlicks 05-06-2010 01:27 PM

He states in the very first post that they are H&R brand spacers ordered from Stillen. I got mine from there too.

Good Luck on your mod. You will find it super easy.

BTW, nice posting! I spent 7 weeks in Bad Arolsen near Kassel on work-up training for the Leopard2 tanks in Afghanistan. Had a great time there and got to visit a few places. Had a blast in Hamburg during frohe-nacht fest!
Cheers!

Very cool DIY. Any particual reason you went with H&R? Just curious.

djpathfinder 05-13-2010 09:23 AM

From what I've read, very good quality with either H&R or Ichiba. These two are the preferred brands on various Nissan and Infiniti forums.

I will always err on the side of quality over price. The H&R had the highest user satisfaction/installation ease and did not require additional parts to be ordered or modded. The Hubcentric rings are machined into the spacers and the new wheel studs are provided. Excellent German Engineering!

On top of that, I got a good deal from Josh at Stillen and was happy to support a forum sponsor! :tiphat:

ZForce 05-13-2010 01:26 PM

Play it safe and just go with the H&R.

Note: the others rub in the rear...nuf said, just go with the best H&R

:iagree:

I am in the process of getting mine ordered right now!

They offer a military discount! Woohoo!:happydance:

Holliday 05-13-2010 02:17 PM

What I would have saved with a military discount they are charging me $50 bucks to ship spacers! Stillen has lost there fu%&ing minds!

Guess they have never heard of a flat rate box?

Where are they shipping to? Stillen usually charges a flat $10 here in the US.

If you are Germany then you might want to order somewhere local, H&R is a German company.

I am in Germany but I have an APO address. Same price to ship to it as in the states. I know H&R is local but it is cheaper to buy it from the states. The euro is hard on the dollar! Not to mention they don't have very many 350s and 370s! More like BMW and Volkswagen if you know what I mean.

ZForce 05-13-2010 04:18 PM

Okay guys, I am getting my long awaited wheel spacers installed tonight.....woot...woot.

Josh@Stillen prolly thought I sold em...haha.

I bought a poop load for two 370Z's and in different combination sizes. I am not going to write up a DIY because they have already been well documented.

What I do hope to achieve, is to provide the look of different sizes. Here are the combinations.

15 fr - 20 rr
20fr - 20 rr
20fr -25rr

I will open a new pic thread.

Awesome! Please include details of the wheels/tires/suspension so people know what affect it will have on their setup.

You are probably still getting a better deal than what we have to pay here in Canada! I want an APO!!!

cotizi 06-15-2010 09:28 PM

Anyone done this to a nismo? I have nismo suspension on my car, and hope a 20mm is still ok with stock wheels.

It's really pushing it. The Nismo wheels have a different stock offset.
