If you ever travel to the Montreal area in the winter you will see its very common for houses without garages to have a temporary carport setup in the driveway. I would imagine they would hold up to the snow loads just fine because they are setting them up for use in the winter to keep the snow off the vehicles. They are all steel tubular frames with some type of white plastic or cloth pulled over the frame.

You might be referring to the more permanent shelters. The ones in Montreal are only setup for the winter then removed for the rest of the year.
Its funny because on some streets every single driveway will have them setup. I did some quick research and found out they are made by a Quebec company so that explains why they are seen everywhere there. https://abristempo.com/categorie-produit/residentiel/
