Sport Brake Pad Shims

I was going to ask about leaving them off... I've done replacements before and always used the shims. How bad does the rattle typically get if I leave them off?

I left mine off after the first pad change and don't notice it.

Then again, I am deaf (according to my wife at least).

I have recently replaced the pads (sport) on the g37s, and the pads have built-in shims. they worked well so far without any noise.
