stock rotors + carbotech 10/8 setup

Hey guys, How long would my stock rotors last if I went with XP10/XP8 setup. It's mainly street driven car with ocasional once or twice a month track visits.

Hey guys,

How long would my stock rotors last if I went with XP10/XP8 setup. It's mainly street driven car with ocasional once or twice a month track visits.

About 20-30k miles if the rotors are new. That's what I got out of mine. You might see more than 30k, as your driving style might be different from mine.

Oh snap, my rotors are 35k already with stock brakes. Do you have any good advice on aftermarket ones that would somewhat suit my needs and would be able to handle the brake setup?

If you're replacing the rotors yourself, there are several pretty serious track guys who use cheap, auto parts store blank rotors. Sure, you have to replace them more often, but it is much less expensive. Z1 has lots of reasonably priced options for upgrades. If you are serious about performance, they have lightweight, 2-piece rotors with replacement rotor inserts - but you gotta pay to play.

Depending on your braking habits both on and off the track, you may get much more or much less life out of your rotors than other drivers. If you're not threshold braking a lot, then you should get more life. But a few hardcore track days can really eat them up if you're going balls deep every corner.

Make sure you get some good brake fluid if you haven't already. Motul RBF600 is good, but RBF660 or Torque RT700 are better if you really push your brakes.

Wow, thanks for informative post! I had a chance to stock up on some RBF600 real cheap, so I'm using it at the moment. I was looking at the 2 piece rotors you mentioned and they really look tempting since I track my car only in summer (which are pretty short here) so I get like 6 full track days tops per year. Rest of my driving is spirited drives late at night or grocery trips since I work from home

Would you say XP10/XP8 would be a good choice for pads as well or should I opt to use them only on track days since I saw some people mentioning the noise which I don't mind since my exhaust is uber loud already?

^All of that. I have run Z1 two piece rotors as well as autozone cheap blanks. It's all about what you can afford at the moment. Just keep in mind the cheaper ones will build up more heat, so a better brake fluid like Motul RBF 600 or Brembo LCF 600+ will help combat that.

I ran the 10/8 combo daily for the 31k miles I got out of them with no issues. If you do that as well, take them out one morning and feel how they bite when they are cold. You will want to keep that in mind for any emergency stops you may have to do, as they lack some bite when they are cold. It's nothing a few normal 40-0 stops can't fix though.

I ran the same stock rotor and carbotech pad combo on my Nismo until just last weekend. I track the car 5+ times a year here in Texas. My rotors finally warped and I got the Z1 2 piece fronts and 1 piece rears. Both slotted. Still using XP10/8 for track, and 1521s for the street. Mileage at swap, 56400. Happy with the results. Expecting better cooling at the track this season. Good luck with your selection.

Usually its because of cost. A set of 2-piece rear rotors is actually more expensive than a set of 2-piece front rotors because the rears have to accommodate the e-brake drum.

True what JARblue said re:The Cost.

Also there's usually less brake force used on the rears when on the track. I disable traction control, I really hate a computer nanny telling me to slow down on a track. The comparable 2-piece rear from Z1 is like $648 for a pair, 2-piece, slotted vs $198 1-piece, slotted Z1 Sport rotors.

The 1521s from Carbotech are quiet like stock brake pads and similar in compound to the XP10/XP8s. Less trouble switching to track pads using 1521s as dailys, altough still require a good bedding exercise when changing pads. I have found the rotors do not need to be scrubbed to key the surface between pad switchings. They last a good long time. My rears just wore out at 56400 miles whereas the fronts are still going strong. The Z's traction control is appropriately intrusive on the street and really makes more use of the rear pads to keep the Z tracking straight in adverse weather.

I hope this helps you in your decisions. I have been really happy with the Carbotech pads and slotted rotors.

Cost and common sense dictate alot of the decisions I make for Z based purchases. Some would not agree with this. For instance: I see plenty of Z owners replacing the stock or Bose stereo HU for a double din touch screen. Quite costly. I simply added a Bluetooth receiver to my factory Bose HU and I am happy. I can stream all the content I like no radio surgery required. Just $40-50 from Amazon for parts.

Stock pads don't really wear the rotors. If it was me, I'd probably just give them a sanding, wipe them with laquer thinner and reuse them. The XP8s will wear themselves in pretty quick. I'm coming up on finishing my 2nd set of fronts XP8s and I'm at 66k on the 2 sets. Mostly highway so looks like I'll be getting around 35-40k per front set and about 60 k on the rears. I think I'm getting a little vibration from the slotted rotors so next time I'll probably go non-slots / non drilled.

All of the advice here is solid. If you're looking for an absolute limit, 60K plus 10ish track days is what i managed on the OEM rotors (I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS).

I had a pretty well formed lip around the outside my rotors until I replaced them with the 2 piece set from Z1. Street-only driving can easily see 50K.
