I have not stood under my 370z at a moment where removing the tank was on my mind, so I cannot say for certain right now.. But if its anything like the 350z, which it almost definitely is... the entire rear crossmember and everything has to be removed first.

Would it be any easier to install with the tank out? Eh... Not much, maybe just more comfortable for yourself. The install sucks, but I hope I stress that enough that once everyone does it, it doesn't seem as bad as they were prepared for.

I would only remove the tank if its totally required. You probably already know but i have to say that special care needs to be taken to support the vehicle if the rear crossmember, suspension, differential, axles, exhaust, and fuel tank are all going to be removed at once
