Default 35mm vs. 50mm Prime Lens

Alright, I have been itching to get a prime and the two options I am considering are the 35mm and 50mm 1.8 Nikkor lens. I'm not sure if the focal length of the 50mm is just a bit too long and whether the 35 will be a bit more versatile in situations such as car shows where there is not a lot of space to move around the lens. The distance in focal length between the two is not huge but I wanted to see what you all think:

For shooting automotive photography and people, which of those two focal lengths would you prefer and why?

Thanks in advance!

Are you using a full frame DSLR or crop?

Automotive get the 35mm. 50mm would be solid for portraits.

What kind of camera are you using?

If its a entry level Nikon [anything below the D90/D7000] I would no doubt go for the 35mm since it will autofocus with the camera's.

35mm on a crop sensor will look similar to what a 50mm looks like on full frame.

105mm is better for portraits.

I've been shooting with a D3000 but depending on cash and how happy I am with the quality of my photography by next summer, I might upgrade.

^That's a bit pricey for my budget at the moment.

It's $20 more than the 35mm. The older 50mm f/1.8D will work with the d3500, but I don't think it will autofocus on that camera. Still a great lens though and it worked great even on my old D40. I was actually thinking about selling mine and getting the 50mm f/1.4G
