Returned my T1i for a Nikon d5000. I just prefered the Nikons picture quality over the Cannon. The cannon does take better video but, thats what camcorders are for. Not bad from the T2i, what did they change?

The T2i uses the new 18MP sensor from the 7D, it has vastly decreased banding noise at high ISO, and other minor improvements.

Macro would be best but it is expensive and not as versatile. The 70-200f4 L along with an extension tube would be the most versatile. The now 100 macro L IS is a KILLER lens but, as I said, it is expensive. An extension tube will allow you to focus closer. The primary benifit of the macro designs are sharpness and flat field. You don't need flat field as you are shooting 3d subjects and I think the 70-200f4L with a tube will be plenty sharp.

Here are the 90TSE (tilt/shift) shots. The car is dirty, washed it this evening (I intend to do some beauty shots tomorrow morning) and the images have only been cropped and sized in photoshop. All shots were taken with a Canon 5D Mark II, EF90f2.8TSE lens at f2.8

In the first 5 images note how the DOF changes. I didn't change camera position (didn't use a tripod, these were down and dirty) all I did was change the "tilt" of the lens.

Everything is sharp (tilt down)

This is how a standard lens would look (no tilt)

The top of the engine is very soft (lens tilted up)

Only the front of the car is sharp ("tilt" or really it is a swing left)

ONly the side of the car is sharp ("tilt" or swing right)

In the following image note that you can see my reflection in the fender lip, no adjustment on the lens so it performed like a regular lens. I shot straight on.

On this image I moved the camera to the left and adjusted the shift so I had about the same framing but my reflection is gone. The perspective didn't change.

One other MAJOR improvement: New image processor. This reduces imager noise and improves color rendition

It is a fairly sharp lens, a bit of distortion (optical and chromatic) though. Build quality is ok. Price is pretty good.

Optical distortion (also called pin cushion or barrel distortion) will make straight lines at the edge of the frame appear curved.

Chromatic abberation will put a faint colored edge (usually purple, red or green) at edged where there is a lot of contrast. For instance, a dark car against the bright sky.

In general use this is a good lens but not for professional use.

wow the difference in those shots is crazy! i still dont know much at all about tilt lenses or how they work.

thanks for the info on the efs 55-200. I may look to get a better lens then when I get this weekend business going, soon I hope.

I was a commercial shooter and director in NY before I took the Canon gig. Some business advise: once you have a decent portfolio do not shoot for free. It destroys everyones ability to make a living in auto shooting.
Check out Gil Smith's site. He is a friend of mine and a great car shooter

Great photos. Tilt shift lenses are expensive but amazing.

6spd, you might want to look at LensBaby for an interesting alternative.

i'd love to rent a TSE lens sometime just to play with it a bit. i love how people who have a lensbaby think it's the same thing...

Thanks, I've certainly done enough shooting now to have a decent portfolio, and yes, I completely understand that about not shooting for free. I'm gonna have to pull my Adobe Flash skills outta the closet, dust them off, and put together an online portfolio.

Couldn't post this earlier due to database down This forum does maintenance a little too early in the night, even for an east coaster

Actually, the T1i had the same DIGIC 4 processor used in the T2i, though obviously there are some processing differences due to the new sensor.

I did forget about the new 7D similar 63-zone metering system, however.
