And therein lies the rub. I don't have high hopes for this marketing stunt. The auto transmission is identical to the last-gen car. Any decent torque improvements are going to necessitate transmission upgrades which means big bucks. If they do come out with real packages, I think most enthusiasts are going to scoff at the package pricing. Guessing a "qualified" Infiniti dealer has to do the installation too.

And remember, the stock turbos are already maxed out on the RS400. I'm just very skeptical of Infiniti these days.

You see this all as a problem however I am being optimistic.

First off has anyone confirmed the at unit is the same mode and same specs as the 370z? I haven't asked anyone nor climbed in/under one yet.

Secondly even if the car itself is a gimmick that still doesn't mean that ams won't have a line of badass parts to bump up the cars for aftermarket. This is an awesome opportunity where ams will be playing with and developing parts on the car. It could be very good for the platform.

I don't see it as a problem, it's just going to be expensive and there will be alternative platforms which will provide better tuning opportunities. There's no headroom in either the turbos or transmission I'm sure the go fast parts will be great but the whole kit will probably run as much as a used Nismo.

Edit: It's the same transmission found in the last generation, been confirmed.

I don't see the price being that massive but there will always be a price tag on performance especially with the ams name on it.

The tranny is a good piece but like you said more torque is its downfall. I'm curious if there has been any internal changes made that haven't been mentioned.

According to my sources, the transmission, inside and out, is identical. You'll notice a really big dip in the RS400 torque curve early on. Tranny preservation.

Obviously it's just guessing, but I have a feeling they'll offer things like intake and exhaust components that keep your factory warranty intact along with big brakes and other handling components. Hopefully an LSD is one of those options. Still, even a base RS400 is $54K. Then needing what will most likely amount to another $10K in parts to make it an actual (overweight) performance car is really asking too much based on what else is on the market. I'd hope and wait for a much lighter Z to make an appearance.

So you may pay double what you would for say a Fast Intentions exhaust, see no more gains than the FI exhaust and really "gain" nothing in terms of warranty as they'd have to prove the exhaust caused the issue. I realize it's a pretty gray area but it's not as just and dry as I'm sure AMS/Infiniti marketing will have you believe.

I do agree with you that AMS working on the car will be of benefit. At least they road race and they work with lots of different makes including Porsche/Audi.

Audi is now doing something similar which really piqued my interest. Might be just my local Audi dealer but they've eliminated Quattro Gbmh and it's now Audi Sport. Includes one or two free track days a year and you can mod the car with parts from APR, installed by the local authorized dealer, and it won't void your warranty. This includes everything up to but not including tuning. If you mess with the ECU, you loose the warranty. As much as I wanted to love the Q60RS, I think the RS3's going to be my next vehicle. Same price, two more doors, AWD, better transmission and sub-4.0s 0-60 times no matter what the weather looks like. LOTS of headroom for improvement in the engine dept too.

Oh I could care less about what they make for the factory vehicle. That's fine and dandy for people with more money than brains who buy that stuff. It's just them baselining stuff to then make awesome aftermarket parts for the Q then later over to the new Z.

The only newer Audi I'd get would be the TT RS. Finally doesn't look like a girls car nor a smashed beetle. Plus 400hp, duct, awd, and lightweight it's a nice choice. Plus it sounds pretty good from stock too.

The TTRS came in $10K more dear than the RS3 unfortunately and it has the same engine/drivetrain. Still, it is a mid-3 second car and lighter than the RS3, lower cg, and I'm sure, ultimately sharper handling than the RS3. I'll take the rear doors and sleeper status.

2015+ = Lipstick on a pig sports cars!!! There's no way around it. Anything built with power is a fat slob of a pig. Anything built agile is so grossly under powered, you might as well put pedals to power the engine. Ie, Miata & 86!

The sports car era is dead. We are in the crossover era. Next thing you know, somebody will make a 2 seated crossover and shame the auto industry as a whole. It's a travesty.

We're going to have to accept all these numb soulless cars with no hydraulic steering, handbrake and steer/brake by wire is the future. It disgusts me. And furthermore these technologies are making cars heavier instead of lighter. I'm just becoming more and more content with a Z34 by the day. The auto industry is wack.

That, my friend, is why they will pry the keys to my 4C from my cold, dead hands. It may only have 237 HP / 258 LB.Ft (well, mine MIGHT have just a smidge more ), but when the car that's pushing weighs less than my wife's purse, it really shouldn't be street legal.
