This makes me happy. I would much rather be taking a nap or reading a good book than driving while on long road trips.

I would much rather drive my car than have my car drive me. I enjoy driving my car. That's fine of the main reasons why I bought my 370z, because it handles nicely and its fun to drive.

Google has already logged over 1,000 miles in their self driving car through LA and NorCal.

As an option to either allow the car to drive itself or be driven ... that could be interesting! Rush hour traffic, I'd let the car do it's thing. But on side streets and twisty roads, I'd want manual control all the time!

I'm not fully opposed to automated cars for people who already don't properly focus on the road, but I hope this doesn't lead to a slippery slope where they eventually ban driving or greatly limit the rights of those who still choose to drive for themselves.

Technically, this could be a good thing for drivers, though. Take the lazier drivers and make their car's behavior completely safe and predictable. Less accidents, lower insurance premiums? Who knows?

As long as they don't clutter the roads, I'm satisfied.

Plus, if drunky McDrunkerston wants to tie one on and drive home, if he has an automagic car, maybe he can manage to get home without killing that minivan full of children.

I love driving my Z as much as the next person, but stop and go traffic and 6 hour road trips can seriously get off my lawn.

I doubt they would remove all ability to have manual control or outlaw it. It's too dangerous to do so. I would imagine the law would evenutally say something like the driver has to be awake while the vehicle is on autopilot in case of emergency.

I think for all the car enthusiasts this will be a bad news as eventually we might lost all the fun to actually drive a car? Although adding an on/off switch this would be a nice feature, what if the computer crashes or data corrupt or one of the sensor has malfunction while you are at 60mph on the highway. I just don't trust the computer that much and don't want to risk my life on it.

Even so, this auto thing will lower your alertness and increase the risk on the road by purely operating by the machine itself. Ask yourself how many times your computer crashes on some applications or get froze all of a sudden. I am a programer myself and I've seen no apps without bugs. Can we really trust on this ting?
