The safety issue, imo, is more about subtle things. Your throttle cable snaps (or gas pedal gets stuck). Manual drivers are much more prone to respond in the correct manner

Your throttle cable snaps (or gas pedal gets stuck). Manual drivers are much more prone to respond in the correct manner and pull the car out of gear, since gear is more often in their mind. Auto drivers? Well, ask Toyota.
