Default ATTENTION! California Z Owners - New Exhaust Law for 2019

Has anyone seen the new Assembly Bill No. AB 1824? it's been all over social media. Basically they're starting to crack down on modified cars with exhausts systems and instead of before where it was correctable, it is now NON correctable and it will be a fine of $1,000.

Here's one of the videos floating around on IG:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfnZSA2qv7M

Is anybody going back to stock or going to modify their exhaust to make it more quieter? LOL

I already saw like 3 modified cars pulled over to the side of the road on my way home from work today.

Wouldn't FI 18" res exhaust be quite enough?

It may but the shinny mufflers may draw their attention. Who knows. They are just enforcing a cash COW in my book.

I think Stillen is even quieter the FI 18" (or maybe it's Berk I am thinking of).

There's a lot of mis-information about the new law. It's not illegal to have a modified exhaust, it just has to be under the maximum db rating of I believe is 95 db's. Not to say that a shiny exhaust won't get you pulled over. Glad my FI canisters are carbon fiber.

I thought CA is all about illegals, why not exhaust systems.

that's correct... Obnoxiously loud exhaust has always been illegal and they are now attached a fine to it. 95db is quite loud.

I personally like exhaust with a nice tone, but not the fart cans that sound like a broken exhaust that scare away the roaches a mile away. And those Harley's with open pipe that wake up the whole city miles away.

Out of curiosity, does this affect the Harley Loud Pipes Save Lives crowd? Not sure if this is an all inclusive noise ordinance or do bikes get a pass?

Loaded post......
I got a ticket and ref'd. I'll get it fixed, certified at the ref station, pay the fine, and move on. And it's not 1k. Too much misinformation. Modified and loud exhaust has been on the books in CA for years. Now it's no longer just a fix it. There is now a fine associated to it. It is a shake down. Where the hell does all the money go 'cause this state ain't getting better.

Thanks for the clarification Raf. Didn't the FCC just shut down the idea of charging you guys for text messages to subsidize cell phones for everyone program?

Anything to take money from the people. When will Californians wake up?

I'm inclined to go to trial for my ticket. I was at 35 mph cruising on 4th gear, clearly rpm was low, officer had no db meter to determine that I was more than 95dbs. He came from afar to get to me before the stop and shut the engine. He did not ask me to rev, I had carb stickers on my CAI ( yes he asked me to pop the hood). Clearly has zero evidence that I was at 95db. And did not look underneath to check if exhaust was modified.

When was this? I feel like with the passing of this new law any LEO can ticket you for their own discretion which is totally screwed up.

Did some research and found a few documents:

Aren't 'I all exhaust system modifications prohibited?

No. Section 27151 VC prohibits the modification of the exhaust system to amplify or increase the noise emitted by the vehicle, making the vehicle not in compliance with Section 27150 VC or exceeding the noise limits established in Sections 27201-27206 VC. Section 27151 VC does not prohibit all modifications to an exhaust system. It also does not prohibit all modifications that increase the noise level of the exhaust system over that of the original, factory-installed exhaust system (as it did until 1980). It only prohibits modifications that result in a noise level higher than those specified In Sections 27201-27206 VC. Accurately determining compliance with Sections 27201-27206 VC for enforcement purposes is generally impractical. Enforcement personnel must make an informed professional evaluation to determine if excessive noise statutes are being violated.

^ This pretty much says it's OK to have a modified exhaust as long as its under 95 dcb.

But at the same time people like you are getting cited without LEO's making a "professional evaluation" whether or not you're over 95.

What the f*ck california LOL

That's just it, all these tickets, don't mean they all will hold up in court. They giving them out like candy right now and thinking most people wont look into it any further and accept it, let alone fight it. Eventually as more people start calling their bull*%$ and fighting them, they'll start doing it by the book.

Been looking around myself & it looks like this document has a date of 11/98 The following is presented as a public service I see nothing new on the VC Codes Display Text
I have been unable to locate a new CHP memo either. other than it looks like the same regs are in play( nothing new) but now there is a fine. If anyone finds anything new regulation, please post it.
