From their unveiling vid, I caught a mention that the project started in 2017.
3 years sound incredibly short for preparing a new car to me, because I usually hear companies talking that they were designing 5-10 years ahead.

But it's also on an existing platform, using an engine they've used in the Q50/60 for a few years, and probably has a ton of parts carrying over.

It's not a new car. It's an existing platform with existing drivetrain. Basically it's a new body kit and some interior technology upgrades. Could have taken all of 6 months with the right team. Three years is laughable and just goes to show the shitstorm that Nissan has become.

Design part probably went through many revisions, and I'm pretty sure they had to strengthen the current chassis. Test and retest. It will take longer than 6 months.
But regardless nissan ****** up with their car line up. And using the **** show of cvt transmission

I'll be in my bunk!

That's the only way it would be financial viable. Especially in Nissan's current financial state.
If Toyota is doing the same, that they had to partner up with bmw and Toyota said it would cost to much for them to build a new sports car, than nissan doesnt have a chance to build a new sports car.
Unless they partnered with another company like Mercedes or something.

What's wrong with an older platform? You hear a lot of people pining for more mechanical feel, more rawness, less technology, truer sports car, etc. On top of that they also want the price to remain low and they want reliability.

Well, using an older platform does all of that. This should be a nice mix of mostly old with some new. Not many other sports cars you can buy brand new that will have this mix of characteristics.

Thoughts? What is a "400Z"?

What basis was used to determine the next Z will be called 400?

Did Nissan say that?

Is it an assumption?

What does "400" mean?

240, 260, 280, 300, 350, 370 all referred to engine displacement.

It'd be super cool if Nissan uses a VR40 engine, but I thought they are going to use the VR30?

What would be the precedent for Nissan suddenly not using engine displacement to name the new Z, and why is it called "400" and not "371" or "380" if Nissan just decided to use arbitrary numbers all of the sudden.

Pretty sure Nissan won't name the xxxZ based on xxxHP, I'm quite certain Nissan will use multiple states of tune on the VR engine to differentiate Z models....

HP has been the selling trend for several years,

400Z makes sense if they pop in the already available 400HP motor.

Just call it a Z. Everyone knows what that is. It doesn't need a numbered format.

Maybe they’ll go back to 300zx or 300z for some continuity. Honestly at the end of the day though it’s just a name.

If Nissan holds to tradition, which is the basis for this car, my money is that Nissan will either call it "300Z" or "Z".

I highly doubt they'll call it 400 as an arbitrary sequencing of numbers, and they definitely won't call it 400 for HP. Ever since the ZX's in the late 70's, the HP of these cars has been variable. Some are turbo, some are NA, some are HR, some are Nismo, etc. Naming the next Z "400" because of HP makes no sense.

I'm also going to bet that within the first 2 years the new Z will have 3 HP levels, base, upgrade and Nismo. What the exact HP numbers will be, I dunno, and how Nissan assigns the HP to each trim we'll have to see. Just shooting from the hip: 300HPish for base and near base models, 400HPish for upgraded models near the top, and 450HPish for NISMO. ish.

Calling it just Z makes the most sense. As the 400 hp version will be the middle ground between the 300ish hp and the 400+ nismo version. Have the hp or engine size in the name no longer makes sense.

6 months? Get real. They have to work with many different suppliers (seats, windows, lights, wheels, you name it) and make sure everything will fit together right when it comes time for production. They were testing mules in Germany and Arizona. The budget for this refresh was around $240 million. New body, upgraded interior, added safety equipment, putting a manual trans with the VR30DTT (I understand the intercooler setup will be different than the Q50/Q60), upgrading the chassis. That takes longer than 6 months.

I've had four different generations, starting with a early 240z.
I was really looking forward to the unveiling, considered cancelling a C8 order for it.
After 3 years of development, That's It??
I bought another 370 instead.
Really uninspiring.
