You can get one at Autozone for like $40. It gives you the code and you just have to manually look up the code in the little guide book. They basically all do that same thing

If all you want to do is read/clear DTCs, the units you mentioned are overkill. As Grindkiezer said, you can find a much cheaper unit.

If you want to do any data monitoring/logging, they look like they would be rather "clunky" to use. But I've never used either one so can't be sure.

What do you want it to do?

You may be better off buying an OBD/CAN-to-USB adapter and some software to run on a computer. I use an OBDPro Compact that I got for ~$40 online and some free apps I found on the Web running on a laptop. It can read/clear DTCs and monitor/log data points.

For everyday monitoring, I have a ScanGuageII on the dash to watch water temp, vehicle speed, TPS, and something else I can't think of off the top of my head. It can also read/clear DTCs. Because of the simple interface (two short lines of text and 5-6 buttons), it's not the easiest gadget to use but not that bad once you've used it for a while.

Without knowing what you plan to do, it's very difficult to make more specific recommendations.

Hey bro if you have a smart phone this is the way to go. They make them for iphones as well. I have had mine for 2yrs and it has been really good to me. Using the obd app on your phone you can view live time data and reset codes.

I've got one of these- Autel AutoLink AL319 OBD II/EOBD Code Reader — Model# AL319 | Automotive Diagnostics| Northern Tool + Equipment

For the Z I use my laptop, my Uprev cable and Cypher. The scanner is for other cars.

i use garmin ecoRoute HD to send gauge data to my nuvi wirelessly.

this review is from UK, but you get the idea. it's cool. serves multiple tasks for me as nav, gauges, and diagnostic tool.

I have one of these too. Had some issues with some ecu's not responding. But not a bad unit, and pretty inexpensive.

You can get a bluetooth reader for less than $10. Get torque (app) and monitor or scan many things
