I stopped by the dealer for my license plates today, and told them about the problem with new part numbers in hand..... the service advisor just wrote them down and agreed to call me in a few days when they come in. He didn't even confirm the problem :)

Nice to see someone else from SA here

Every once in awhile I will have to hit the button twice. I thought it was just me not hitting the latch button correctly but I guess there's an actual issue here. Hmm

kdo2milger 10-15-2009 08:07 PM

Update:

I went to the Nissan dealer today and spoke with the Service Manager. I explain to him the issue I was having and asked him to take a look at my trunk and try to open it for himself. The first two attempts he made trying to open my hatch resulted in double depressing the hatch release button as well as lifting up on the hatch as well.

I had printed the work ticket that vipor uploaded here and gave it to him while I was there. I explained to him that it was a bigger issue than just my z, and told him about this thread and the 350z stuck hatch thread as well. He said that no one with 350z's ever came to him complaining of the hatch not opening properly, as well as the 370z'ers thus far. I thought that was odd considering the sheer amount of people in both ours and the 350z forum that are having the trunk release issue.

After his first two initial attempts, the hatch opened flawlessly there after. So he retrieved a key fob for a blue 370z on the lot and tested the hatch, and no issues with it at all, the hatch popped open the first time and everytime there after. So he decided to take the spring lifts from that z and swapped them with mine. It seemed to work! I was supprised, but still in disbelief that it would remedy the situation long term.

The service manager gave me his business card and extension, he said give it a few days and call me if it continues to be a problem. I thought to myself sure why not, it seemed to be working fine. I drove straight home, it took about 10 minutes to get to the house. I pulled in the garage, got out and was about to go inside the house and thought what the heck i'm going to give it a go and see what happens.

Guess what happened! thats right it did not open on th first attempt. Not only did it not open on the first attempt, it did not open on the second or third attempt either! However, on the fourth attempt and every attempt there after it opened flawlessly. So I immidiately called the service manager back and explained what had just happened. He then asked me to re verify the part number on the ticket and said he would call me as soon as the new spring lifts came in.

So I shall wait and hope these new spring lifts solve the issue at hand once and for all...

My dealer in Brooklyn, NY says the following:

84415-CD71A belongs to the 350Z
84415-1EA0A belongs to 370z
84415-1EA1E belongs to 370Z Nismo

I guess the 84415-CD71A's are longer than the others, and still fit a 370Z even though they are meant for the 350z?

Vipor do you have a side by side picture of the original lift springs you had and the new CD71a's you got? are they longer?

kdo2milger 10-16-2009 05:08 PM

the 71A looks to be the same as the 715...look in vipors album and youll see the 71A's on his trunklid...

so that makes them a good half inch longer...

I had alot of issues with the rear hatch on my 350z (05) so this is nothing new. Sometimes it wouldn't open and also I had to replace the shock/springs that hold the hatch up after 20k miles.

C'mon Nissan this is not a complex engineering problem. Basic stuff here. Sheesh.

Wow! I had forgotten that I also had this problem on the '85 Z I had back in the day (the shocks not holding up the hatch after a year or two of ownership). Not sure what it means that this problem continued through a few generations of the car (at least once!).

Trips 10-16-2009 05:27 PM

I need the dealer to take a look at mine also, same story won't open or release at the first attempt once open it opens everytime!

NiņaBonitaZ 10-16-2009 05:34 PM

my hatch springs are like Sex Panther......60% of the time, they work every time.

my new springs should arrive at the dealer next week :)

blackbird 10-16-2009 06:40 PM

Have the same problem but thought it was because I had put on the NISMO Spoiler. So maybe I need the NISMO Springs.

FricFrac 10-18-2009 02:22 AM

Had my springs replaced with the new part number under warranty as well as a new center piece for the steering wheel (new airbag, etc) to replace a very slight flaw in the center cap of the steering wheel. Easy Peasy - no fuss no muss. Surprised actualy....

I'll get a pic or two of a stock spring at the meet today and do a side-by-side chop of it. It's probably 3/4" longer, not sure exactly.

^ That's my previous post with pictures of the new spring and the invoice from the dealer. I've got more pictures in my gallery.

tranceformer 10-18-2009 08:54 AM

I noticed this problem only started to happen recently now that the temperature has dropped a bit. It probably happens once or twice a week now.

bluzman 10-18-2009 04:58 PM

Open and close the hatch multiple times daily. Did the "three penny" thing on 31 August - haven't had to press the button more than once since then.

kdo2milger 10-18-2009 06:04 PM

Heres a few pics of mine and vipors spring lifts...

Taken at the Mighty Fine Burger Meet today in Round Rock

longer one is vipors/71A

For Australian 370Z owners, a TSB has finally been issued!!!!

I called my Nissan service dealer to ask about the spring issue. He said he had no idea. But then he contacted Nissan and rang to let me know the good news.

They have a few springs in stock, so be quick or else you will have to wait for the parts of back order.

Best of all - FREE OF CHARGE!!!! :icon18::icon18::icon18::icon18:

Everyone experiencing this issue needs to call 1-800-NISSAN-1 or 1-800-647-7261 and file a concern in order to build a credible complaint that will hopefully spawn a TSB release for us.

These Lift Springs are $32.00 EA. I dont know about you, but I can think of better things to spend 64 bucks on...

The longer part # you have listed is for a '02-'07 350Z. The part number for these for a 370Z is 84415-1EA0A. I just want to make sure with everyone and that all is informed that the picture you have listed is not the actual part Nissan will sell you.

Badass man, bout damned time.

I think the guy above didn't read all of the posts, particularly the ones where other people as well as myself posted the current part numbers.

kdo2milger 10-20-2009 12:06 PM

got the call today, i will swing by the dealership after work today to get the new springlifts

kdo2milger 10-20-2009 06:50 PM

all i can say is WoW!!!

the trunk lid pops up like a gyser :bowrofl:

good stuff...i think i will not have to worry about this issue anymore

:tiphat: my hats off to the service manager at Bates Nissan!!! he was awesome and I will be letting Nissan HQ know when they follow up with me :D

vipor 10-21-2009 03:09 PM

haha like a gyser

yeah when I first got mine installed it almost seemed like it was too much, and shutting it required more of a slam. seems to be settling a little now though.

grats kdo, bout effin time.

nolan 10-21-2009 03:32 PM

Mine started doing the same thing last week. Thought I did not press the button hard enough. Will make note of it on my 6000 mile service.

vipor 10-21-2009 03:59 PM

The button is a freakin electronic button, not a latch. You can press your keyfob unlock button as hard as you want and it's not going to make a difference on how hard your doors will unlock. Occasionally HOLDING the button may hold the "popper" a little longer and allow the latch to leave the lock, but that's it. /rant

Demon Z 10-21-2009 04:18 PM

Thanks for the info Vipor! Just called my dealership about an hour ago and the springs are on the way. I'm so glad I have a dealership that doesn't give me any grief.

you're welcome. glad to hear that Nissan is taking care of the real enthusiasts

j.arnaldo 10-22-2009 01:56 PM

Ironic! In my 350Z it's exactly the other way around...The hatch door actually slams on my head if I don't prop it open! Nissan needs to get with the program!

that's not the "springs" that we're talking about. you're talking about the struts wearing out. your car is almost 6 years old, maybe it's just time to replace them.

vipor 10-22-2009 02:07 PM

/random
i just realized that the z in my sig is jspec... no gas door on the passenger side :P

hearing that a TSB was released in Australia is a good thing for them, hopefully Nissan will issue the TSB here in the states as well for others sake...

Jack370Z 10-24-2009 08:35 PM

Had problem at two weeks old...dealer put a little white lithium grease on it and no further problems. I noticed it on colder mornings only. Seems to be fine now except for the grease on the latch...it could get on your clothes or head.

yeah they did that for me initially

the grease made it better, and then it got worse

needless to say following the TSB, with the new springs, its all good for me...

dont be fooled by the grease... it dont fix the issue. just a bandaid.
