They shouldn't charge you anything to change them out. This should be done under warranty and or the TSB on this problem.

After dealing with the original springs; adding a penny myself and then having them replaced, I am back to adding a penny to each spring this time around. This is an issue that is very small but still annoying when spending 35+K on a car. I am reconsidering our plan to purchase a G37 Infinity for my wife this year after this particular experience. I am considering going back to Honda which we have owned for the past 15 years. Really too bad as I was also looking at the GT-R for 2013.

If Nissan can’t get springs right, not sure I trust them on the other components.

Hey everyone! Long-time reader, first time poster :-P

When I first got my Z last spring the hatch opened normally, but lately it would not open far enough to clear the latch unless I lifted while holding the release button (tough to do with a handful of grocery bags). I called the dealership and mentioned the TSB, but they said they'd have to look at it on a weekday, which seems ridiculous since it took me 2 minutes to fix after reading this thread. Of course this was the same service rep who always stares blankly at me when I ask for anything more complicated than an oil change. Anyway I'll see if I can get the longer springs for free when I go for scheduled maintenance next weekend. I'll take the pennies out first of course - using 2 per side seems to work for now, but I'll have to watch and make sure the rubber bellows don't fall off since they were originally glued to the upper part of the assembly.

4 cents vs. $64... the370z.com is 1600 times more cost-effective than Nissan! :-D

I have a 2011 Nismo now having this Very issue..

CZero 02-29-2012 07:39 PM

My 09 has now begun doing this very thing. I bought my car as a returned lemon car for this very issue... Got the car for a great price for such a small nuisance, but I figured they would have fixed this issue before reselling it...

Have owned the car just over a year.

Jordo! 02-29-2012 08:57 PM

Mine's a 2010 and occasionally does this... :ugh:

EDIT: Fixed with WD40

rudi 03-01-2012 03:27 PM

Cooler this morning so mine stuck again.

Speedy 03-07-2012 10:55 AM

Mine does this every time. I didn't even realize there was a TSB for this. Gonna see if they'll just send me the new springs and I'll swap them myself. Glad I found this....been hard juggling bags and getting the hatch open.

ptnewton 03-08-2012 06:15 AM

Yes, my 2009, was fine, then it started only once in a while. Now it is every time.

ZForce 03-08-2012 10:39 PM

Cold weather will cause it to stick more frequently. Said it before, video tape it and playback at dealership for TSB repair......I will be going on my second hatch springs. The first replacement lasted about 18 months.

Mikes350z 03-15-2012 09:25 AM

Bumping this alive...

Went to my dealer today for an oil change/consumption test and also the rear hatch TSB... The TSB is in effect for all 2009's and still active so the dealer is ordering new springs and will call me when they are in to replace free of charge... just wanted to keep used buyers in the loop like myself who have an '09 with this issue...

Also oil consumption is being monitored by my dealer now :shakes head: but it only seems to be half a quart every 1,000-1,500 as long as i watch it regularly and get routine oil changes every 3-4K should be fine...

GaleForce 03-15-2012 11:06 AM

Thanks for bringing this up. I need to bring it to my dealers attention.

slo 03-28-2012 10:57 AM

Exactly what I was looking for..... This happens about once a week for me.

GaleForce 03-28-2012 12:45 PM

Just had my springs replaced with the new springs. Hatch pops up like a champ now.

370zproject 03-28-2012 06:41 PM

mine is starting to act p once more this is my second set XD

Mikes350z 03-28-2012 07:21 PM

Had the hatch springs come in and replaced this past saturday March 24 and havent had a problem since, even with the cold weather this week, 40's.

Wait about a year, they will fail again. This is not a permanent fix :(

ZForce 03-29-2012 10:35 AM

^ I hear that...so true. Had mine replaced within a few months of owning the car, purchased Mar 2009 and now cold weather and two years later it's starting to act up again. Not all the time thou.... I will have to pull out the camcorder and record it as the dealer will not replace it unless they see it. Video recording is the sure thing!!

GaleForce 03-29-2012 12:31 PM

I'll do the penny mod if/when the new springs fail.

Mt Tam I am 03-30-2012 10:58 AM

Had mine replaced last week during oil change. Works much more assuredly now.

last winter was pretty mild here, so mine worked every time.

i guess colder places can place more stress on the springs, not to mention metal compression in a constant cold environment.

bdavis89 05-11-2012 07:44 AM

Does this apply to 2010 models? Mine sticks sometimes and I have to press the button again. I notice it will work fine if I hold the button for a split second longer. Is there a "TSB" for the 2010 hatch?

NBZ34 05-11-2012 07:52 AM

No issues with the 2012 model so far

pt# is listed in the first post. print out the tsb and take it to service dept. they will order the right ones for you.

Shamrock 05-19-2012 05:45 PM

this is the new parts number 84415-1EA1E? No what viper posted? just read all fifty pags and my eyes are bugging. Viper wrote 84415-CD71A. Others have said that the spring is longer (yourself), while others have said the spring looks the same just stiffer. What part number should I ask for? Thanks and didnt mean to wake up the dead.

kdo2milger 05-19-2012 05:51 PM

the pt# in the first post is for the longer one. I would go with the longer one especially if you have a spoiler.

Shamrock 05-19-2012 05:56 PM

Sorry one more question. What is the difference between the part you posted in the first post and Viper's? They are both improved springs just vipers is shorter?

kdo2milger 05-19-2012 06:01 PM

like you said, the shorter has a stiffer spring than the original failing one.

i had mine replaced with the longer version and had no more issues at all.

forza370z 05-21-2012 10:57 PM

Do you guys know if the oem springs being used in a base 370z and a Nismo 370z are the same? Because Nismo version has a big wing on it thus adds more weight to the hatch.

kdo2milger 05-21-2012 11:10 PM

nismo springs should be the longer ones
heres a pic of mine and vipors, vipor has a nismo and mine was a sport package...my spring is on top, notice the nismo one is longer

Shamrock 05-22-2012 05:32 AM

Is that your original spring or the new one?

kdo2milger 05-22-2012 09:41 AM

the one on the top is my original failed spring

the one on the bottom is vipors nismo spring

forza370z 05-22-2012 10:31 AM

^^ Great! Thanks man!

nobodeuno 07-06-2012 09:48 AM

I know this is an old issue...but is nissan fixing this problem under warranty? Or is it a DIY? I apologize if I can't find the answer...this is a huge thread. Mine hatch take 2-4 pushes while pulling up after the first push...
Thx

 very nice! that'll get you springs and then some...

diddy535 08-17-2012 04:34 PM

Hey I took this to a dealer to get it fixed but it seems like half the time it is still getting stuck. Is anyone still having the problem after the dealer fixed it?

tjlazer 08-17-2012 05:50 PM

I had the issue intermittantly and got the new springs under warantee and it still happened every once in a while.

I then got a Nismo wing installed and it does it every time now! I also put in 2 washers in each one and it only helped a little. UGH I need to add a few more washers... Try that.
