I have had the same issue begin to crop up. I intend to call Nissan today.

Huck 02-15-2013 09:26 AM

I've been having this same problem for a while now, and it's annoying as hell. I took it to the dealership the first time and they lubed it up and said if it keeps doing it we'll replace it. Well I took it back and my service rep quit and I have this new guy, and he's totally by the book so now I'm gonna have to try the weight trick. If it doesn't work I'll have to shell out $60 :ugh:

I'm really upset about my extended warranty, every single thing I've taken it in for they have not done a damn thing about. Ecu whine? "the ecu tested fine, can't replace it". Driver seat shifting and popping? "can't replicate problem". Replaced window motor, now there's a rattle in the door? "we didn't do that". Stuck hatch? "not covered under your bumper to bumper warranty". FML...

There is no weight attached to the trunk. I opened the plastic attached part and nothing

wilsonp 02-19-2013 11:01 PM

There's a TSB for the stuck hatch - you should still be covered.

Huck 02-19-2013 11:28 PM

Even if it's not under warranty? I was under the impression that only for a recall would they fix stuff out of warranty.

It's not an actual recall, just a TSB, like that '09s are "prone" to oil consumption

If you reported the problem while the car was under warranty and they still haven't fixed it, it should still be covered. If your dealership disagrees, find another one. If all else fails, contact Nissan.

Huck 02-20-2013 09:18 AM

Ok that's what I thought. The car was Just over 3 years old when I bought it, so the factory warranty had expired. I purchased the extended warranty, but it apparently doesn't cover this problem. So no, the bad springs were not reported under the factory warranty, therefore I'm SOL. :(

My dealer was jerking me around as well. Called Nissan and they got in contact with the dealer. Dealer agreed to replace springs (warranty expired 6 months ago) under warranty. Never hurts to call Nissan and make some noise. You know the expression, "squeaky wheel gets the grease!"

gotchu99 02-20-2013 10:47 PM

I had my springs replaced last year. The new longer ones still don't pop the trunk. Virtually no difference from the original short ones. I wasn't charged anything for them, but was a waste of time.

Try this:

Tiny Tokes 04-02-2013 10:28 PM

Just bought my 2012 Nismo and I have to use the "double click" method to make it open... wth?

seahorse12 05-08-2013 01:19 PM

I called the dealer and as my car is out of warranty now, they wont fix it for free. Parts are about $42/pc and I would need two of them plus they charge half hour labor....This aint cool as Nissan should take care of this just like any other recalls....

I gotta look around for a DIY on the penny trick if it works out...

The "penny trick" is very easy to do. Just give the units a quarter turn and they fall out. Peel the rubber boot off of the mount and stick the penny in the bottom of the boot (I used a nickel). Slip the boot + coin back on the mount and re-install. Voila! You may need to add coins in different combos (eg, two pennies or a penny plus a nickel) to get just the right push from the spring.

For me, it made things better but it still didn't open every time so I had the dealer replace them with the stronger ones (I was still under warranty).

It's not quite as easy to do but DE.50's hatch weight removal trick will probably help (see link in his post above).

burgerga 05-18-2014 03:22 PM

That TSB looks like it only applies to '09 models but I definitely have this issue on my '11. Won't open at all without pressing the button and lifting at the same time. It's still got a bit of warranty left, will they cover the fix?

Drex 05-18-2014 03:42 PM

this happens often in cold weather to me, but not in warm weather. not too bothersome imo.

SouthArk370Z 05-18-2014 03:51 PM

If you can't get them upgraded under warranty, you can buy your own and DIY the swap. Very easy job; no tools required.

Or use the "nickel in the boot" trick (several threads about that on this site). I did that while waiting for the dealer to get parts and it worked quite well.

zefaulter 05-25-2014 11:58 AM

I used DE's DIY which fixed the problem but I also put in couple of pennies just in case. Pain in the *** when you have **** in one hand and hatch doesn't open

cames4 05-26-2014 02:14 AM

I used two penny's (two on each side) on my 2010 Z; just bought a 2014 Touring model and have not experienced any issues yet but it is still early. One would think after four years they would have fixed this issue already.

montana420 08-14-2014 12:27 PM

wow - found out this was a known issue just yesterday while sitting at the dealership killing time during an oil change (past warranty at 107K miles). I used 4 nickels (2 on each side) and now my trunk pops on one click. I owe someone here $60... thank you!!!

same issue here back to not opening for like 4 "clicks"

370zproject 11-21-2014 12:18 PM

e-mailed nissan we shall see what they reply :P i really dont like the idea of the penny trick... not sure the hatch will seal as well years down the road

Shouldn't be a problem. The upgraded buttons are a little longer and a little stronger than the originals. About as strong as the penny/nickle trick makes the originals.

already have the "fixed springs"

bkngo 01-20-2015 05:47 PM

ok, great... I thought it was weird that I needed to press it twice. guess I'm calling my local dealership this week.

I also went to my dealer and got the revised Springs, it only helps a little and it did not solve the problem. I tried a few different things with pennies and washers and they did not really help much. Gave up for a long while until recently and this is my newest attempt. It seems to be working!
I used two of these rubber stick on's on each side, one on the bottom as pictured and one inside the spring mechanism and it seems to have solved the problem. I also have a EVO-R high wing and it pops open on the first try now...

kdo2milger 03-21-2015 01:32 PM

That is a great alternative and still keeps a oem appearance. I like it.

wideglideleon 10-28-2015 05:20 PM

$39 each from local Stealership

I will be trying the coin fix my self.
I called my local stealership and they want $39 EACH.
All I could is laugh and say for $80 I will find an alternative.

tjlazer 10-29-2015 12:15 PM

Just a little update this is not a long-term fix it still will stick. I might have to add a couple more.

Uxi 11-25-2015 10:33 AM

This is happening to my 2016. :\ Never happened on my 2015. I'd say it's about 60% of the time.

Zboy89 11-25-2015 10:47 AM

Uxi.. can you describe in more detail? Just trying to bird-dog your issue. It could be as simple as a rubber issue or as complicated as a actuator issue

same here... about 50% of the time it requires 2 pops to get it to release. :shakes head:

russw007 02-21-2016 07:07 AM

bringing back to life an old post. my hatch won't open unless i hit the button twice. i'll press and it will open a little but it will still be locked. i have to hit the button again for it to open. is this normal? or should you be able to hit the button once and it pops open?

Mine used to pop open with one press until I replaced the sport spoiler with the Nismo spoiler. Now it does the same thing as yours

solidus 02-29-2016 04:46 PM

Guess I'm in the club now. 2015 Nismo hatch clicks on the first touch but is still locked. I have to press the button and pull up or it stays locked.

Maxefforts 03-24-2016 08:24 PM

I had the same issue with my 16' Z Nismo. I didn't think just switching out the springs would fix it. But it did. The service dealership I go to where I bought the car are very good to me.

I find it really interesting this wasn't fixed way back in '09 they just put a TSB out and after reading a number of stories from fellow Z owners i'm really surprised it's not covered for anyone that has warranty left. Even out of warranty, it should still be covered.

The one tech that knew a lot about Z's explained to me it's not just the 370's it's other model's as well. So far so good for me anyway. Next step would of been replacing the button he said which is a lot more work with the bumper needing to be removed. Hopefully this is a perm. fix. Good luck. I do believe in going to another dealership and seeing if they will help. Really depends which one you go to. Some people are lucky, other's we all know are not. Calling Nissan is a big hassle and it's not worth the time going through that channel for something like this. The springs are worth maybe a dollar or two to make. The mark up is unreal with these oem parts.

Maxefforts 03-24-2016 08:25 PM

I find Nissan accountable though for this not the dealership. It's a major issue the tech said who has worked for them for years and said he was really surprised year after year he sees this same issue.
