I've noticed that as well... my car has 14k miles on it and when it's cold outside it doesn't want to open.

It will unlock and pop up but I can't open it without pulling on it and pressing the button as the same time.

Looks like I'll be going to my dealer soon and I've only had the car a week.

RogueDPS 11-13-2010 08:47 AM

I had my dealer replace the springs last winter and it cured the problem ... until now. The same thing is happening again. Really annoying.

ZForce 11-13-2010 11:15 PM

I have had mine now for two winters and no sticking.

jayhuffdaddy 11-18-2010 10:57 AM

In and out in 15 minutes. Guy called the parts dept and they had two. Swapped them right out and now the hatch is working like its suppose to.

dlmartin81 11-19-2010 07:08 AM

I got my springs replaced over the summer, and now these new springs are giving me the same problem as before. Could it be the colder weather??

its possible. i think mine might be getting the same way. they're either getting worn out and losing their strength or the cold is causing them to compress more. i've noticed one or twice that my hatch took two tries to open....deja vu....

i guess there's always the 6 cent fix...

Cold weather makes it worse for sure. I did the penny fix but now that it's colder it's not working any more, I'll have to add more pennies.

daisuke149 11-19-2010 10:02 AM

yeah i had the tsb done
and next day same issue.

chops 11-29-2010 07:30 PM

argh! i went to open my hatch 6 times today, and every single time i had to press the button twice on my 2010 nismo. then again it is 40-50 degrees outside..

2004YZFR1 11-29-2010 08:23 PM

I just dropped off my car today, this will be the 4th time in the shop for the rear hatch problem! I don't know why they can't fix this. I'm about ready to do the lemon law thing on my car. Also getting the sport seat TSB done. I hope they can fix some thing.

you would return a car because the hatch sticks:ugh2:

Not necessarily true. I did the "Three Penny Opera" over a year ago. Haven't had a single failure since that time. Just sayin'.

wilsonp 11-30-2010 04:23 PM

I did 3 pennies about 3k ago, and have had it fail to open once or twice since. Mostly as it gets colder.

Figure I'll get the TSB done around oil change time, and then add pennies until I'm back to 3 if it fails :)

TongMan 04-14-2011 10:41 AM

It's happening to my car more often now.

rudi 04-14-2011 05:30 PM

Mine had the replacement springs fitted, lasted a year. Now that the weather is cooling down it's failing again.

vipor 04-14-2011 05:51 PM

Mine still work 100% :stirthepot:

TongMan 04-14-2011 07:23 PM

I am hesitant to take it to the dealer because I think it may just be a waste of my time and gas to get it fixed and then it won't eliminate the problem. I guess I just have to press the button twice.

OldGuy 04-14-2011 09:36 PM

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Cold temperatures have something to do with this. From April through November---no stick. December through March---gotta' click twice. No big deal and I'm simply resigned to it, as my gar is garaged most of the cold weather season. I would, though, like to have an official explanation of why the temperature seems to be involved.

wilsonp 04-15-2011 12:17 AM

Any one using the penny trick with the new springs? That's my plan if mine starts acting up next winter.

Corona370z 04-15-2011 12:55 AM

So this just started on my car a few weeks ago and for some reason I didn't even think to look into it :shakes head: Thanks for the info and attachment, I'll be taking it to the dealer this weekend.

b1adesofcha0s 04-15-2011 12:22 PM

I got this fixed this past Tuesday and it was working fine when I left the dealership. Now it's messed up again :shakes head:

I used the penny trick before I got my new springs in Jan and it worked great. The new springs worked perfectly until we got a cold snap for a few days and the issue resurfaced. The dealer told me they gave me the new part number so I am wondering if it is not the springs but maybe the latch. I can't believe Nissan has not commented on this or identified a long term solution. It is warming here in CA so I will have to wait until winter but if it continues then, I will use the penny...

kenchan 04-15-2011 04:32 PM

i did the penny trick like a yr or so ago, still no issue. :p

never went in for the TSB.

When I went into the dealer last, and mentioned this issue, I was told it might be the latch, and not just the springs. I haven't taken it in because I don't want them messing-up the interior pieces.

spearfish25 04-15-2011 05:50 PM

I originally did the penny trick which was flawless. Then out of principle I had them replace the springs under the TSB. A few times this winter, it still got hung up when I tried to open it. I may need to do the penny trick despite the longer springs.

bleufiend 04-16-2011 06:54 AM

I had this TSB performed roughly a month ago and it has helped the hatch to pop at least half of the time the way it should. Other times esp if its cooler outside it will still hang up on the latch.

Vegitto-kun 04-16-2011 06:56 AM

I went to the dealership a week ago.

they still don't have a TSB about the issue -_-

b1adesofcha0s 04-16-2011 10:54 AM

What is this penny trick? I'm having the dealership look at it again on Thursday.

Red__Zed 04-16-2011 10:54 AM

I had the springs swapped and haven't had an issue since.

wilsonp 04-16-2011 01:17 PM

The TSB is posted here for North America as NTB10-014 - my dealer said there wasn't one, but when I brought it in on my iPad, they were able to do it. It says use part # 84415-1EA1E to replace the existing springs.

The penny trick is to remove the rubber boots over the springs on the hatch and put a penny or two in the bottom, then return it. This gives a little more lift, but more than three penny's can dent the hatch as the spring presses up on the metal when closed.

I'll be sure to try that out if the dealership can't fix it.

wilsonp 05-18-2011 05:46 PM

Sadly the new springs stopped working on my hatch again. It appeared to start when I re-attached the cargo cover. I did have something a little tall in the back that may have caused the cover to pull a little harder, but it happened again with nothing tall just the cargo cover attached.

I think I'll try a penny.

b1adesofcha0s 05-18-2011 05:48 PM

Gonna try the penny trick today. Went to the dealership twice to get it fixed, but still no luck.

b1adesofcha0s 05-18-2011 06:55 PM

It works! I could only get the rubber boot off one of the hatch springs to put the penny in, but that was enough to get it working. :woot:

Mine is doing the same for a second time.:ugh2:

b1adesofcha0s 05-19-2011 05:46 PM

Mine is still only working sometimes. I put one penny in, but couldn't get the cover over the second hatch spring.

sonic370 05-19-2011 05:57 PM

the old famous will it or won't it open on the first push.............

mine was fixed from the TSB. sometimes it still won't open on the first push...
not often though. if this is the worst problem i have with my 370 i'll be very happy......................

wilsonp 05-27-2011 06:53 PM

Just noticed when was about to add some pennies that they appeared to have put the wrong springs in - the new springs look like the shorter ones!

WShade 05-27-2011 07:24 PM

Same length, different spring weight.
