That would be washers to the base where the springs meet right? Just gorilla those things in there?

Pennies fit fine but too many and you could bulge the top of the hatch over the springs - I would limit to three.

DeEePiDDy 08-19-2012 11:06 PM

Even though my Z is now currently 5 months out of warranty, my Nissan dealership will be fixing this for free due to my low mileage, (about 12,000 miles even though the car is 3 years old).

Tribalpinoy91 08-22-2012 10:44 PM

I took my z into the dealer recently and they told me this was normal operation. Actually is a little frustrating when you don't know your sh*t.

Huckleberry 09-12-2012 04:47 PM

Cerritos Nissan would not replace or even offer a percentage off due to being out of warranty by 3 months. i'm only at 29,XXX miles.

I would submit an issue/complaint to Nissan USA and get them involved. I had to do the same thing to get someone to take care of my faulty fuel senders that went out right at the end of my warranty. It eventually got taken care of; a month later and at a different dealer.

I agree, nissan usa will get involved and direct you to a dealer that will do the warranty job

urdeliveryguy 09-15-2012 01:19 AM

so the nismo springs are longer? is this because of the add'd weight of the wing to help pop the hatch? do the nismo springs work on non nismo hatches? also how much do these springs cost? id love to fix this.. it's a pain in the butt trying to open it with crap in my hands. not to mention i don't wanna scratch the crap outta the trunk with whatever im holding.

Yes due to the added weight longer springs are needed. But apparently this still does not work too well as Nissan has added some transparent rubber pieces stuck to the bottom of the hatch where the spring hits.

simota1 10-25-2012 08:09 AM

mine started doing it :( fml someone please provide part numbers so i can order through cortesyparts.com...

my dealer wont replace them stupid mofos

tjlazer 10-25-2012 01:05 PM

I would try the penny trick or add rubber stops on the hatch part where spring hits. Nismos have that.

simota1 10-25-2012 03:04 PM

how many pennys?

kdo2milger 10-25-2012 05:39 PM

2 on each side, then 3 if thats not enough

simota1 10-25-2012 07:00 PM

NissanGuy23 10-26-2012 08:29 PM

Mine has always required two hits of the hatch button to open. I didn't know it was not supposed to do that...

tjlazer 10-26-2012 11:10 PM

Nope not normal.

simota1 10-27-2012 12:19 AM

Just had the springs replaced on my 2011. Looks like this problem wasn't just the 2009 models.

Yup...Nissan never learned their lesson from the Z33 model and look at how many years they made it. Prob won't learn it on the Z34 model and we are into the 5th year of this model. Good thing about it is the TSB, beats the pennies fix IF car is still under warranty.

ZForce 11-04-2012 10:48 AM

The bros 09 model stared sticking last winter...duh..cold effects this issue. Dealer said yesterday, just bring it in and they do NOT need to see it sticking to replace it under warranty. Now that is dealer service. Rep to Future Nissan of Roseville, CA.

Z-Girl 12 11-04-2012 11:11 AM

2012 here with the same annoying issue. Took him in last week and they ordered the part per the tsb. Hopefully no more issues after install.

Compdoc777 11-04-2012 01:17 PM

I never had the problem on my 2011 sport, but on my 2011 Nismo yes.

Took the Nismo in and they showed them the problem, but they said that it was my sub box. My sub box? You push the button the truck does not open all the way and the hatch shakes going over bumps don't know how that is related a secured sub box.

Now I have to take it in again and show them this TSB. I think my sport had the new springs because I can shake my rear up and down on the Nismo and I can't on the sport.

Can't believe they could not see the problem or eve look for the TSB to fix it. I have an exhaust leak now so I will take it in again and get a loner for the day.

DEpointfive0 11-06-2012 04:16 PM

I have an easy fix:

I refer to my Z as an "it" lol
Sorry I'm not a traditional car guy. All I know is that the car can be totaled at any time, and I care a lot more about a living "her" or "him" for that matter

You need a new dealershit...
All 2011's should have the new springs. The Nismos DO/should also have clear rubber bumpers/feet where the spring closes. (It will be located on the car, not the springs)

Try this:

To be 100% honest, I'm not sure if the Nismo has this weight, but it will DEFINITELY help, especially to compensate with the weight of the wing

Curious to know this as well!!

Lochnessgray 11-15-2012 11:01 PM

I have a new set of these springs for sale. I was supposed to get the ones for my 350z but ended up getting the ones for the 370. Pm me and maybe we can work something out. I'm 60 bucks in the hole and my hatch still doesn't pop up.

ZForce 11-21-2012 07:42 PM

Update on price and revised part #5

Added my comment from a linked similiar new thread.

ok...I checked with my dealer and the weight is for throw weight on closing the hatch, remember there is hatch shock that has resistance and the weight is to close the hatch with some weight behind. Funny they said "also maybe for petite woman".

So there you have it...it's like a pendulum weight to assist with closing the hatch. If you guys are not noticing any additional force required to close the hatch after removing the weight...that's odd then.

One additional note and VERY IMPORTANT, the part is NOT covered after the 3 yr 36k mile warranty runs out. They have revised the part 5 times, as currently for ALL year models they are on part rev "E". And here is the kicker, they are bending us over big time for this non warranty part for a mere $37.77 per spring. Yup...can you say bend me over !

The bros Z 2009 with 42k and out of warranty was replaced under warranty. They are family with us and I applaud them. So go with the mod mentioned on this thread or the penny mod. But $37.77 per spring is outrageous.

Part # 84415-1EA2E Spring-Lift
List price: $37.77 each

Wellllllll... There is "more" resistance with closing the hatch, but I have found that the 2 pounds hinders the popping open more than the actual closing. And since the struts are probably wearing out, it'll seem like a brand new setup

And to make sure, you're talking about the SPRINGS not being covered past the 3/36k (Although an extended bumper to bumper SHOULD cover it)

And yes $37.77 is a :icon23: (bend over) price, but if a member has an issue with theirs NOT being covered, PM me, and we'll figure something out ;)

Right on, good to know. I imagine many will be jumping on your mod. :tiphat:

Regarding warranty, we are talking the same and INDEED the bros extended warranty (SEC PLUS PREF PREOWNED GOLD with ZERO deductible) and it did cover the part and labor cost = Zero dollars out of pocket. So it was written up as warranty, they may have fudged it....dunno.

At that price I am sure many will be going with your fix it route. Good find and write up :tiphat:
