Safety feature regulated by Law. They can go down remotely without causing harm to anyone but by law they cannot go back up unless actuated by a switch that is in the vicinity of what's being opened closed. It's the same reason that window switchs in cars now are designed so that if something lays on them the window will only go down but you have to physically lift the switch or pull on it for them to go up.
