Shifter replacement

Greets I am swapping out the leather shifter for one that looks better. Mine is looking a bit ratty. Does anyone know if there is any kind of set screw

Default Shifter replacement

Greets
I am swapping out the leather shifter for one that looks better. Mine is looking a bit ratty. Does anyone know if there is any kind of set screw or the like, or maybe some kind of glue holding it on? I can't budge mine so far and before I go and clamp something on it I just want to be sure I don't turn a small job into a bigger one.

Depending what day the shift knob was installed. There may be a small amount of lock-tite, or a large amount of JB Weld on the threads. The knob just screws on. I duct taped my knob and used a pipe wrench.

Hi. The 6MT shifter knob is held on with blue locktight and has a regular right hand thread. You need giant channel lock pliers or a heavy duty strap type wrench with a breaker bar to loosen the knob. I was able to get mine off with a small impression left in the leather but that won't matter in your case as you are replacing the knob. You might want to hold the shifter shaft with vise grips and suitable rubber protection to lessen the force exerted on the shifter assembly itself. Check for worn parts once you have things apart. The factory service manual that is available on this site gives excellent directions as well. Good Luck!

Wrap the knob in a whole roll of electrical tape. Then wrap over the etape with half a roll of gaffes tape. You want it to be about the size of a basketball agyer it's all wrapped. Then go to HF and buy that massive pipe wrench that weighs 80 pounds. Pop thst on the shifter and turn until the car starts spinning. The shift knob will eventually break loose. You'll have a perfectly good shift knob to sell to recoop the cost of snapping the entire transmission in half.

Sorry I took so long to reply to the suggestions. I decided to take the advice, and took a bit from each post. It took me about half a day, but I finally. got the car to spin. Leingod was right on track, the problem was, once I got the car spinning, I smacked it into my G37, thankfully it was already banged up from me hitting a deer a few years ago. I think it all worked out great in the end, I put my Browning pistol grip shifter in the 370, and used the Leingod idea for the G37, it might make shifting better for my track car, and as an added bonus, it now acts as an airbag type safety device in the G37. I just hope it'll pass tech next time I hit the track. lol

So the shift knob can be supertight or superloose? My car is at 15k miles and I can rotate the shift knob by hand if I try to do it. I guess the guy assembling my car just ran out of loctite so I'll have to put some myself I was thinking of using the regular blue loctite (not the super strong, but regular threadlock). Is that ok?

I destroyed the one on my last car with vicegrips. After trying every method here.
Hoped the strap wrench would work but nope.
It's such a bad feeling shift knob. Creaks in the hand. No big loss IMO.
