here's a question since there's a thread opened already...kinda a little off topic but has to do with keyfob...sorry, if this is in the manual, then, well, I'm just too lazy to read it, but here goes:

How long/far can you drive the car without the the keyfob inside the car? cuz you can actually drive it once it's been started without the keyfob..

oh, here's another tip for the OP, if your engine is running, and you need to step out of the car for a quick minute (to run into the grocery store, or maybe to warn up your car in the early morning), you can start the car, step out, close the door, and use the keyfob or the button on the door handle to lock the car...I do this a lot when I have to just run in and out somewhere, just so I don't have to restart my car again and my A/C will still be running, AND my car is locked so no one can get in it...I guess you can say there's a benefit to this too: you burn less gas cuz you don't have to restart the car, cuz your car juices more gas when you start the vehicle...then again, if you're gonna be in somewhere for 30 minute, that defeats the whole purpose of saving gas...in that case, turn off your damn car, you're heating up the outdoor damn it...

Thanks for the tip! I'll certainly wave if I ever see you zooming around in Houston.

I read that the even without the i-Key in the vicinity, the car will run until it is shut off. After that, the key needs to be present for it to start again. Yeah it's a little disturbing that if you turn your car on and someone carjacks you, they can travel as far the gas in tank permits. If it's any consolation, atleast you still have your i-Key hahaha.

I think it's actually a liability issue, just like if you set up booby traps for buglars...eventhough they are breaking the law, you still cannot harm them...cuz they can sue you....So yes, eventhough a thief is stealing your car, if your car dies in the middle of a highway, and another car hits him and injures him, he can sue the manufacturer....kind of a catch-22

The way my Prius worked is that if you had the car turned on (which doesn't necessarily mean the engine is running) and left the car, the car would not go into drive or reverse. It just sat there until someone with the fob returns. It also had proximity door unlocking, but not from a distance. You had to insert your hand into the door handle, then the door unlocked itself. I really liked those features.

No it doesn't take more gas to start your car than to leave it running ...where do people get these "facts" ?

. Back in The Good Old Days (when cars had carburetors) it could take quite a bit of gas to start a car, especially if the operator liked to pump the gas pedal. The pedal was mechanically connected to an accelerator pump that would shoot a little extra gas into the manifold with each press of the pedal (even if the battery was out of the car; it would add gas until the fuel bowl was empty if you kept pumping the pedal).
. Not a problem with modern EFI cars (especially ones with "drive-by-wire" gas pedals and auto-start as with a 370Z), but the "fact" lingers on in lore.
.
. There is extra stress on the starter and battery every time you start the car, but I'm guessing that being able to manipulate valve timing greatly reduces that wear & tear (compared to The Good Old Days).
