This is Canada, so luckily no medical bills.

This is a worthwhile idea. A fund in Lukas's name will provide the family an anchor to which to hold on to in the difficult time ahead. It will allow them an opportunity to fund raise (which will make them feel like they are doing something for their dad/husband even after he is not around) and it also makes his name and all he stood for immortal.

The best funds are the ones where the principle gets invested (thus keeping the fund for ever) and the interest is used for whatever charitable work is desired.

I unfortunately have experience in this area, and Lukas's wife is more then welcome to talk to me whenever she is ready or if she thinks this is a good idea. Fund raising for a fund is not easy, but it does give those that are grieving a goal, a reason, a focus.
